High Places - On a Hill in a Bed on a Road in a House (at Room 205)

    by goincase 3,486 views

Throughout its nearly five years of existence, High Places has toured extensively and performed in a multitude of environments. Whether playing at the Guggenheim Museum in Manhattan or in an industrial warehouse in Santiago, Chile, the band's enveloping sound and propulsive energy allow the music to translate to a variety of venues.

Much to our enjoyment, they recently came by Room 205 to play inside our enormous yarn sculpture. To launch this very special episode we bring you "On A Hill In A Bed On A Road In A House".

    BIO
High Places began as an experiment in collaboration: two people with diverse artistic backgrounds coming together to merge their skills and aesthetic tastes. Rob Barber grew up listening to punk and hardcore, and Mary Pearson studied bassoon performance, but both gravitated toward a DIY compositional style and a love of layers. High Places' songs contain a fascinating range of aural layers: bells and bird calls over a wash of ocean waves; mallets hitting mixing bowls over treated guitar and glockenspiel; Mary's reflective vocals over Rob's homemade beats. The result is an imaginative and spacious amalgam of sounds that is as immediate as it is refreshing.

High Places - On Giving Up (at Room 205)

    by goincase 5,952 views

Visual art plays an important role in Mary Pearson and Rob Barber's collaboration. The two make video projections for their stage shows and create their own album artwork. In this way and others, High Places challenge the conventional parameters of a rock band and instead give us a multi-sensory aesthetic partnership that continually defies expectations. Today we're excited to present "On Giving Up"— video #2 from the band's recent visit to Room 205

High Places - When It Comes (at Room 205)

    by goincase 2,588 views

"When It Comes" marks the final video of our Room 205 visit with High Places. Forming their artistic partnership in May 2006, Rob Barber and Mary Pearson have produced numerous recordings, including two long players. The most recent of which, High Places vs. Mankind (Thrill Jockey Records), marks the first release since the band's relocation from New York City to Los Angeles, California. Serendipitously, partnering the dense atmospherics and dark beats of High Places with Room 205's rainbow arrayed yarn sculpture = perfect fun. Enjoy.

    by goincase 287 views

At the close of our Room 205 shoot with High Places' Rob Barber and Mary Pearson they were kind enough to stand around in the rain for a short interview. Herein you'll learn about the creative process that went into making the band's latest album High Places vs. Mankind (Thrill Jockey), as well as gain insight into Rob's undying love for east coast hardcore.
