Hey Sailor, What's Your Number
by AmericasCup 7,368 views
Names and numbers on jerseys and helmets are a new feature at the 34th America's Cup.
Sailors are more fit than ever, and are required to wear helmets, as accidents have and will happen. To date, sailors have been projected through shrink-wrap during training on San Francisco Bay (we won't name names, Russell!). Helmets are apart of the new America's Cup game. During racing in Newport, we had a chat with the athletes to find out the story behind their helmet numbers.

Newport proved to be a statement event for the US defender of the America's Cup as ORACLE TEAM USA was prominent in all areas of the leaderboard. Jimmy Spithill's team earned the overall 2011-12 AC World Series Championship with a strong second place finishes in both the match racing and fleet racing in Newport. Spithill also claimed the overall season Fleet Racing Championship while Sweden's Artemis Racing won the inaugural season's Match Racing Championship.
Russell Coutts burst out of the starting blocks in the final fleet race in Newport grabbing an early advantage. On the first upwind leg, the racing was extremely close, with boats constantly ducking and diving as they tacked up along the shoreline to find some relief from the tidal current. Five boats rounded the top mark within 12-seconds, but Emirates Team New Zealand, who were close to the leaders early in the leg were not among them, sliding back to uncharacteristically trail the fleet with equipment problems.
In contrast, Terry Hutchinson's Artemis Racing made a strong move on the first leg to challenge for the lead. But at the end of the first lap of the course it was Coutts, followed by the two Luna Rossa boats and Energy Team. Chris Draper's Piranha crew won what was a war of attrition on the second lap of the course to grab hold of second place behind Coutts. On the final lap of the course, Coutts pushed the edges too hard and was given a penalty for sailing out of bounds, allowing Draper to take a lead he would hold to the finish. Coutts fought hard on the final run to hold off the Swordfish crew for second place.

The Newport event marks the end of the first season of AC World Series racing and follows previous events in Cascais (POR), Plymouth (UK), San Diego (USA), Naples and Venice (ITA). Regatta Director Iain Murray and his team have conducted 130 races over 30 days of racing in the six international venues. Over the time, only one day of races has been postponed due to weather.
Sunday's racing was broadcast live, coast to coast, in the USA on NBC, marking the return of the Cup to network television for the first time in more than 20 years. The final day of racing in the opening two events of the 2012-13 AC World Series in San Francisco in August and October will likewise be shown on NBC.
Racing will start anew next month with the 2012-13 AC World Series in San Francisco from August 21-26. The new Ben Ainslie Racing will join the circuit as it comes to the host city of the 34th America's Cup -

Moët Moment for ORACLE TEAM USA COUTTS - ACWS Newport
by AmericasCup 1,453 views
The old master had one more trick up his sleeve as Russell Coutts made a deft move late in the pre-start to hook in behind Jimmy Spithill and hold his younger team mate out from the starting line. From there, Coutts sped off to the first mark with a handy lead. He would need every inch of it as Spithill continued to challenge, probing for weaknesses, and looking for an opportunity to pass. But in the end, Coutts and his new crew were too strong, and sailed well under pressure to take a surprising win in the Newport Match Racing Championship.

by AmericasCup 6,380 views
ORACLE TEAM USA Spithill continued its winning ways on Saturday, first claiming top spot in the AC500 Speed Trial and then winning the first fleet race. The American team has won the first three fleet races in the regatta to open up an impressive margin on the leaderboard. On Saturday afternoon, Spithill threaded the needle at the start, just squeezing between the Race Committee boat and two of his competitors, to hit the starting line as the gun fired at top speed. From there, Spithill extended away while his rivals were engaged in battle behind him. Nathan Outteridge and his Team Korea had an impressive race in second place, holding off Emirates Team New Zealand, as Dean Barker threatened early, but couldn't make the passing move and settled for third. Artemis Racing made its way up from near the back of the fleet to take fourth. Meanwhile ORACLE TEAM USA COUTTS withdrew from the race at the halfway point with equipment problems, after hitting one of the mark boats.
Fleet race four started like the previous one, with Spithill barging across the starting line to take an early lead. But this time Dean Barker's crew had an answer on the first upwind leg, working a favorable path up the shoreline, away from the adverse current running down the race course, to take steal the lead. Loick Peyron's Energy Team too, passed Spithill and then Nathan Outteridge squeezed past on the next leg. But the ORACLE TEAM USA crew fought back to ease around the top mark just behind the Kiwis. Barker and crew held their position however, extending away to finish, with Spithill relegated to third place for the first time in Newport.

Jimmy Spithill's ORACLE TEAM USA crew couldn't have had a better afternoon of racing at the AC World Series in Newport on Friday. First, he won his match race, to advance to the Final on Sunday. Then, his team stole a win in the fleet race with an impressive, last minute, passing move, to deny the Kiwi team a storybook victory.
Emirates Team New Zealand had made an impressive recovery from Thursday's capsize and wing damage, bursting out of the starting gate to lead the fleet race from the start until the very final moments when Spithill got past.
Russell Coutts proved the value of experience in the pre-start as the Cup veteran made an aggressive move late in the pre-start to take a narrow advantage off the starting line in his match against Luna Rossa Piranha. Chris Draper's Luna Rossa team kept it close for much of the race, but was never able to cross ahead of Coutts' ORACLE TEAM USA, setting up an all-American Match Race Final on Sunday between the two ORACLE TEAM USA crews. -

Emirates Team New Zealand made an impressive recovery from Thursday's capsize and wing damage, bursting out of the starting gate to lead the fleet race from the first mark until the very final moments, when Spithill pounced, to grab a seven second victory.
But the second place finish will be a measure of consolation for Dean Barker's team which had spent much of Thursday night in the boat shed, repairing damage to the wing that was incurred after it filled with water following the capsize. The team launched before noon on Friday with a fully repaired wing, ready to race, and eager to prove they could challenge for the top of the table. -

It was a frenetic opening day of racing at the AC World Series in Newport, the sixth and final stop on the global international circuit. In glorious conditions on Thursday afternoon, the overall series leader, ORACLE TEAM USA's Jimmy Spithill, extended his lead, while his nearest rival, Dean Barker, saw his season championship hopes diminish with a dramatic and unexpected capsize.
Spithill had roaring start in the opening fleet race, powering off the starting line in light breezes to lead from start to finish, giving the American team top seeding in the match racing quarterfinals, which started immediately afterward. Pushed to the limit in the match racing, the team responded to advance to the semi finals. -

The best junior sailors in Newport meet the best sailors in the world on the main stage at the Race Village at Fort Adams, Newport.
With over 100 local junior sailors in the audience, ORACLE TEAM USA's Jimmy Spithill and Emirates Team New Zealand's Dean Barker both declared their intention to leave Newport with the inaugural AC World Series trophy in hand. And while Terry Hutchinson's Artemis Racing still has a mathematical chance of playing the spoiler, most are looking at this as a two horse race for the title between Spithill and Barker.

The waters were crowded off Newport this weekend as AC World Series teams trained in postcard perfect conditions on Narragansett Bay, surrounded by all manner of sailing craft, from little dinghies to classics and old America's Cup 12-meters.
Sail Newport held its annual Youth Challenge sailing regatta, putting over 150 kids in 118 boats on the water each day (an event record). By late afternoon, when the youth boats and AC45s were all returning to Newport, close encounters of a spectacular kind were inevitable and exciting for sailors on both sides of the equation.
