Syrian violence and torture under the spotlight

Syria is holding tens of thousands of detainees in a "torture archipelago" in which they are subjected to beatings, electric shocks and other abuse, according to Human Rights Watch, the US-based rights group. They say detainees are also burned with acid, sexually assaulted, and have their fingernails torn out. Meanwhile, across Syria, up-close and dramatic footage has emerged on YouTube from those involved in the confict on the ground.
