Discussing God and Religion with James Frey

    by vice 85,127 views

James Frey, controversial author of A Million Little Pieces, sits down with us for an exclusive interview about his novel The Final Testament of the Holy Bible. The book focuses on modern-day Messiah who advocates sex with men and women, drugs, and doing whatever makes one happy. We also touch on the end of the world, the cowardly publishing industry and how Frey is bypassing it, art, and the last time he prayed.

One of America's Most Notorious Militias

    by vice 537,735 views

We interviewed the founder of the notorious Michigan Militia to find out about its ties with Timothy McVeigh, the Oklahoma City bombing and more.

Check out more VICE documentaries here: http://bit.ly/VICE-Documentaries

Norman Olson is the founder of the Michigan Militia, the most famous/notorious/we-think-maybe-oldest? group of the early-90s citizens' militia movement. If you're too young to remember, that was this thing where guys in camouflage got together to train with their guns and guys with cameras pretended they were scary and racist. The movement hit a speed bump when it got blamed for the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995, and Norm Olson didn't do much good for his own group when he tried to pass the blame to the Japanese—an idea which, if you subscribe to certain theories concerning the earlier sarin-gas attack on the Tokyo subway and the responsible doomsday cult's alleged connections to the Japanese Imperial Family, makes a limited sort of sense, but otherwise sounds like the craziest of all possible answers. With faith already shaken in his leadership, Norm then hitched the Militia's wagon to fears over that Y2K thing and by February 2000 the group was essentially defunct. However, as you may have heard from the Southern Poverty Law Center or one of the hundreds of press outlets who reprinted their press release as a "story," right-wing militia activity is back on the upswing. And never one to look a media jizz-rush in the mouth, Norm and his old compatriot Ray Southwell are using the momentum to try and get a new militia started on Alaska's Kenai peninsula. So far it's been going kind of rough, but that didn't stop Norm and Ray from inviting us in for coffee and a quick flip through his big, yarn-bound book of Militia Mem'ries. Come join us, as we televize the nostalgialution...

The Art of Sign Painting with Steve Powers

    by vice 34,052 views

Known in his early days as graffiti icon ESPO, Steve Powers has been a charismatic figure in both New York's art and graffiti world throughout the past 20 years. Seen all over the streets of Philadelphia, New York, and Brooklyn, his flat top and name have been synonymous throughout these street scenes since the mid-90s. However, after ESPO's success for several years, Steve decided to step away from the shadow lands of graffiti and establish himself as a sign painter. In this episode of Art Talk we accompany Steve to explore his new project "Love Letter to Brooklyn" in the heart of downtown at the old Macy's parking garage. We get a behind the scenes look into his life as ESPO, how his work has developed over the years, and his life as a dad.

KRINK: The Best Drip Ink in Graffiti

    by vice 319,852 views

We caught up with Craig Costello, graffiti artist and creator of KRINK, the notorious brand responsible for drip style markers, mops, and fire extinguishers.

As a punk kid growing up in Queens, Craig would scavenge for supplies to paint the walls and buildings of New York. His desire to create larger pieces and invent unique graffiti tools led to the development of his internationally recognized ink and paint brand Krink Inc. Craig's signature style morphed out of his modifications and innovations with paint tools; using a fire extinguisher filled with paint and paint markers rather than spray paint, his style became an instant hit in many cities around the world.

On the Set of Boardwalk Empire with Terence Winter

    by vice 24,811 views

Terence Winter on his struggle to the top and why he likes playing with dolls so much.

Watch more VICE Interviews here: http://bit.ly/VICE-Interviews

While filming the first season of Boardwalk Empire, Terence Winter spent many late nights in the bowels of Brooklyn's Steiner Studios. He'd come here after everyone else had left, to blow off steam and mull things over, which involved naughtily rearranging the faceless figurines that inhabited the prop department's miniature replica of Atlantic City's boardwalk: one tiny effigy railing another doggy-style, another pair fellating furiously on a little promenade bench. And of course, this makes perfect sense. Terence is the showrunner and its creator, the guy tasked with creating and controlling every piece of the program from the big-picture story arcs to the nitty-gritty minutiae. He loves manipulating his characters into compromising positions. It's what he does; it is his being.

Playing with dolls is nothing new for Terence, now 51. He's been doing it since the 60s, when he was a kid growing up in Brooklyn who was obsessed with G.I. Joe action figures, even though they were too expensive for his folks to afford. But he's always found a way to get what he wants, and when he was 15 years old he heard about a spoiled neighbor who threw out a set of G.I. Joes. Terence dug through the kid's trash, grabbed the toys, and ended up playing with the grubby things all night long, only to blow them to smithereens with an M80 in the morning. It seemed that even at this young age he understood that life does not always have a happy ending, which is the reason the man's stories for television—most famously, his work on Boardwalk Empire and a scriptwriting run on The Sopranos second only to show creator David Chase—resonate.

Today, Terence has a mint-condition 60s G.I. Joe Space Capsule sitting above his desk, symbolizing his long and rambling journey to clinching his dreams. He spent his 20s climbing a seemingly endless and improbable career ladder—from working as a butcher in a gangster-owned neighborhood shop in Brooklyn all the way to becoming a lawyer at a stuffy Manhattan law firm. Then, when he was 29, having ascended to a level no one thought possible, he decided to throw it all away for the absurd fantasy of going to LA and becoming a writer.

After seeing him in his element at Steiner Studios, in the midst of a thriving fictional world he's created, it's hard to imagine Terence as a Hollywood neophyte hopelessly fumbling around LA, trying to get someone, anyone to read his scripts (which, by the way, included work on masterpieces such as Sister, Sister, Xena: Warrior Princess, and the mid-90s revival of Flipper).

Terence, however, has nothing to hide regarding his past and was happy to take me on a trip down memory lane back to those days of desperation, along the way explaining why Angelinos are pussies and how he managed to grow balls big enough to write movies for 50 Cent, produce The Sopranos, and bring a show as insanely innovative and expensive as Boardwalk Empire to fruition.

40 Years of Complete Isolation (Part 1/4)

    by vice 950,379 views

Since 1965, Faustino Barrientos has lived alone on the shores lake O'Higgins' in a house built from the remains of a shipwrecked fishing vessel. He's a pastoralist, living mostly off the land and his livestock, with few modern amenities. His nearest neighbors are in Villa O'Higgins, a small community of several hundred people, 25 miles away, accessible only by a two-day horseback ride through rugged mountain animal paths. Every few years, Faustino makes this ride to sell his cattle in town.

Currently 81 years old, Faustino is reaching the end of his life, and his self-imposed isolation is being encroached upon by the forces of government, economy, and tourism. In December 2011, VICE went to document his lifestyle and speak with him about the changing face of Patagonia and the gaucho lifestyle.

    Last of the NYC Leathermen

    by vice 132,944 views

The Eagle NYC is the last great outpost of New York's gay leather scene. Once the hardest, burliest, most cruisinest members of the gay community here and everywhere, Leathermen's ranks were hit especially hard by AIDS in the 80s and 90s. Where the side streets of the West Village and Chelsea once swarmed with glistening, hairy chests and bulging jeans, like some neverending Tom of Finland mural, these days the scene is but a faded denim shadow of its former self.

Since finding a solid clutch of Leathermen in New York nowadays is harder than getting a leprechaun to make eye contact with you at the Central Park Ramble, we went into the Eagle, basically the Leatherman's Alamo, to meet the surviving members of this once-mighty subculture and learn the tricks of their rough trade. Please be mindful of the hanky code while watching this video, and, of course, no khakis, sneakers, or fragrances.

    Interview with a Cannibal

    by vice 3,852,386 views

Issei Sagawa murdered an innocent woman and spent three days eating her flesh. Due to loopholes in the law, Issei is a free man to this day.

On the afternoon of June 13, 1981, a Japanese man named Issei Sagawa walked to the Bois de Boulogne, a park on the outskirts of Paris, carrying two suitcases. The contents of those suitcases, to the lament of a nearby jogger, was the dismembered body of a fellow student -- a Dutch woman named Renée Hartevelt, whom Sagawa had shot three days prior and had spent the days since eating various parts of her body.

He was soon arrested. According to reports, Issei uttered, "I killed her to eat her flesh," when they raided his home, whereupon they found bits of Renne still in his fridge.

Sagawa was declared insane and unfit for trial and was institutionalized in Paris. His incarceration was to be short, however, as the French public soon grew weary of their hard-earned francs going to support this evil woman-eater, and Issei was promptly deported. Herein followed a bizarre and seemingly too convenient set of legal loopholes and psychiatric reports that led doctors in Japan declaring him "sane, but evil."

On August 12, 1986, Sagawa checked himself out of Tokyo's Matsuzawa Psychiatric hospital, and has been a free man ever since.

    Discussing Afghanistan with Michael Hastings

    by vice 33,547 views

In 2010, Michael Hastings wrote a controversial piece for Rolling Stone that potentially ruined the reputation of US army general Stanley McChrystal, then commander of NATO's internal security assistance force in the war in Afghanistan. The article, which detailed McChrystal's disapproval of President Obama, caused McChrystal to resign his position. We got in touch with Hastings and he gave us the opportunity to discuss counter insurgency in Afghanistan, criticisms of President Obama and the ongoing tension between the Pentagon and the White House.

    Interview with an Assassin

    by vice 567,198 views

The target killers of Karachi, Pakistan, assassinate politicians, police, and protesters for as little as $700 a pop. In this excerpt from "The VICE Guide to Karachi," VICE cofounder Suroosh Alvi interviews an armed target killer in the backseat of a taxi.

Mainstream news outlets are virtually devoid of information about the target killers of Karachi, Pakistan. This is probably because even if you manage to land an interview with one, there's always the chance you will be murdered before completing it. Those of you who have already watched The VICE Guide to Karachi know that somehow, someway, VICE co-founder Suroosh Alvi figured out a way to do it.

For the rest of you, we have excised Suroosh's ominous but candid interview with one of Karachi's approximately 600 target killers so that you can whet your beak now and plan to watch the full-length version tonight at home. Their conversation took place in in the backseat of a car, the hitman wearing a motorcycle helmet and his pistol stashed in between Suroosh's feet as he confessed the bloody truth about his work and the very dismal state of affairs in his hometown.

    Industrial Design for Outer Space

    by vice 50,975 views

Designing the interior of a spacecraft may be more difficult than you think. When dealing with long tearm confinement, everything from the shape of a chair to the color of the wall could have an effect on a crew members mental stability. This is truly a mix of design, engineering and straight forward problem solving.

Since this video has been produced, Evan left NASA to pursue other entrepreneurial opportunities. He still believes that his designs will reach outer space and doesn't rule out returning to the space administration.

Tattoo Artist Mike Brown - Art Talk - VICE

    by vice 12,065 views

Mike Brown is a tattoo artist who, if you know your history, always comes up when people talk about those who pioneered tattooing in the late 1970s. He worked at China Sea (formerly owned by Sailor Jerry), ground zero for traditional American tattoos, and at the birthplace for black grey penitentiary-style tattoos, Good Time Charlie's Tattoo Land. His life has had some ups and downs over the years, and they've made him a little hard to track down if you're looking to get a Mike Brown tattoo. But we had the chance to visit Honolulu in January and made sure to stop by the shop Mike works at to ask him about the old days. He still tattoos five days a week, and we'd wager that most people who see him have no idea about his pedigree. His portfolio alone is a history lesson in tattooing, with everything from the most beautiful Chola's, Pin Ups, mean ass biker skulls, and touristy sea turtle tats. Mike Brown still does it all, and does so with the most humble manner.

VICE Meets: BMX Rider Mat Hoffman

    by vice 3,165 views

VICE correspondent Johnny Knoxville takes us to meet modern-day Evel Knievel, Mat Hoffman. More than any other figure in BMX riding, Hoffman's responsible for the the popularity of big air tricks, hence the title of Spike Jonze's documentary about Mat, The Birth of Big Air. Despite breaking over 20 bones and getting his arm shattered to bits by a semi-truck, Mat continues to bike harder and invent wilder tricks than anyone else in the business—all to the deep concern/chagrin of his doctors, who considered his career finished after the accident.

Spotted Pig's April Bloomfield - Munchies - VICE

    by vice 5,135 views

April Bloomfield, the woman who gave the middle finger to the highbrow/lowbrow food divide and brought gastropubs to New York, gives us a peek into the culinary empire -- the Spotted Pig, the Breslin, and the John Dory Oyster Bar -- that she and her partner Ken Friedman are building. Bloomfield, equal parts badass and softie, takes us to her favorite haunts and lays down her philosophy on cooking and life (in short, don't be a wuss). The night ends in a beautiful blur of pickelbacks and pong at the Breslin.

Heading the kitchen of Delfina owners' latest Italian venture, Locanda, Anthony Strong is giving a San Francisco update to old school Roma cooking. Strong takes us around town to see for ourselves what a food scene fed on a steady diet of "hippie love and drum circles" leads to -- a lot of restaurants that just want to hug it out and be friends.

    Lottery Ticket Sculptures

    by vice 91,074 views

Ghost of a Dream is the collaboration of sculptor Lauren Was and painter Adam Eckstrom. Focusing on installation, sculpture, and collage, the married couple have had numerous solo and group shows around the world, and they've been featured in Art Forum, Whitewall magazine, The Independent, and Time Out New York, to name a few. A few months ago we met up with them and got a chance to explore their works in progress, look at the variety of materials they use (like old lottery tickets), and hear how they came to develop the pieces that first formed their partnership.
