A few tips when introducing songs, chants, and rhymes...
Remember that input is really important. Find ways to introduce the song to the students without them needing to sing along at first. Let them hear it, interact with it, play with it, and soon they'll start singing on their own. Kids love to sing, and as soon as they are comfortable wit h the song, they'll sing on their own.
In this video, we play a silly game as the music plays, and the students get a chance to hear the song a few times without needing to sing. Later, the students begin singing on their own.
You'll also notice that the kids are very excited for this class and, when they did sing (the kids off camera), many of them were having fun and shouting. While we want the students to have fun, we do want to encourage them to use their singing voice, not their shouting voice. One way to do that is to ask your kids to smile while they sing. It is very difficult to shout while you are smiling ^_^.
One last tip...when doing a choosing rhyme or some kind of activity where students are "out " (like Simon Says or Musical Chairs), it's important for the teacher to set the tone early. Young children can be very upset when they are asked to sit out of an activity. The teacher can show with actions and voice tone that it's not a big deal...it's just part of a game. The first thing for a teacher to do is to "cheat" the game a little so that the teacher is "out" first. And when the teacher is out, just say in a fun, exaggerated way, "Oh no!" and laugh. You're showing the students that this game is just for fun. Next, when a student is "out", have fun with it. Make a silly noise, give the child a big smile. If the child looks upset, looks like s/he might cry, have them come sit next to you and help you continue the game. If you start the game with the right atmosphere, kids will almost always enjoy these kind of games. -
