    Our Town-Peter Betzer

    Dr. Peter Betzer currently serves as the President of the St. Petersburg Downtown Partnership, a group that has been pivotal to the emergence of St. Petersburg as a center for marine research in the United States. Prior to joining the Downtown Partnership, Dr. Betzer served as Dean and Professor of USF's College of Marine Science. Dr. Betzer is a quietly working visionary who saw long ago that St. Petersburg could be the center for Marines Science research and innovation and, in turn, be partnered with engineering and technology experts to move theory into practice. So far we have seen his work and vision create the renowned Marine Science College at USF and bring United State Geological Survey, SRI International, and Draper Laboratory, to St. Petersburg.

    Our Town- Marvin Scaff

    Marvin Scaff is a man of the twenty-first century. He is a software entrepreneur and a promoter of technology entrepreneurship in Florida. Mr. Scaff is one of the co-founders of Gazelle Lab, a seed stage technology investment fund and accelerator nurturing the fragile entrepreneurial ecosystem in Florida. He has worked in Silicon Valley on two separate occasions while living in the Tampa Bay area: first, for Regis McKenna a Silicon Valley marketing guru that was a close friend and personal mentor to Steve Jobs, and, second, for Silicon Valley Innovation Capital, an early stage venture capital fund.

    Marvin Scaff grew up in a small town in Kentucky where he became fascinated with the Macintosh computer and, at age 15, developed a hardware and software based diagnostic system for the Apple II, elements of which were subsequently implemented by Apple Computer. Mr. Scaff relocated to the Tampa Bay area in the 1990s to work for a startup in Tampa focused on Macintosh software development and subsequently has been involved in many successful technology companies and been responsible for much innovative software.

    Marvin Scaff currently lives in South Tampa with his wife, two toddlers and teenage son.

    Our Town-Beth Houghton and Scott Wagman

    Beth Houghton is the Executive Director of the St Petersburg Free Clinic. Beth holds a JD with highest honors from the Stetson University College of Law and an MBA from the Tulane University Graduate School of Business.

    Previously Ms. Houghton was Chief Financial Officer and General Counsel of All Children's Health System and is Vice-President of Houghton-Wagman Enterprises, Inc. Through her work with the Foundation for International Missions, Beth Houghton helped establish the New Hope Clinic, a medical facility serving rural patients in Honduras. She has served on the Hospital Board of H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute in a variety of roles including Board chair.

    She is a member of First Presbyterian Church and Board Chair Emeriti of Great Explorations, the Houghton Wagman Children's Museum.

    Scott Wagman grew up in Sarasota, and graduated from Tulane University of Louisiana in New Orleans in 1975 having served as the President of the Associated Student Body and more importantly, meeting his wife of 34 years, Beth Houghton. First returning to Sarasota and then moving to St. Petersburg in 1983, Scott grew his family's business, Scott Paint Corp., sold it in 1998, and turned his attentions to building up a commercial real estate portfolio concentrating on Florida's West coast. Having more discretionary time allowed Scott to pursue a growing passion, that of community service.

    Instilled in him by his parents and encouraged by his community involved wife, Scott volunteered time and financial resources to a variety of St. Petersburg institutions, including American Stage Theater, Great Explorations, the Houghton Wagman Children's Museum, the St. Petersburg Free Clinic, All Children's Hospital, Ronald McDonald House, Lawyers for Literacy, the Canterbury School and many others. Scott graduated from Leadership St. Petersburg, CONA Leadership and Pinellas Citizen University.

    His love for St. Petersburg culminated with a run for Mayor in 2009. While unsuccessful, the effort allowed Scott to learn so much more about St. Petersburg and served to strengthen his commitment to its improvement.

    Bob Devin Jones is a writer, director, actor, and Artistic Director/Co-Founder of the Studio@620. He is a graduate of Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, CA, and has trained at the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco, CA, as
    well as a year tutorial abroad with faculty from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. Jones‚ first play, Uncle Bends: A Home-Cooked Negro Narrative, was developed at the New Works Festival in Los Angeles and has been performed in Ireland, the New York Theatre Workshop in New York City, the Northlight Theatre in Chicago, and the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston.

    Our Town- Tim Clemmons

    An Air Force brat, Tim Clemmons moved to the Florida panhandle when he was 11 years old and received his M.A. in Architecture from the University of Florida in 1983. He moved to St. Petersburg the next year and, except for a stay in San Francisco from 1986-87, has lived here since. Tim is a principal with Mesh, a collaborative of more than 30 architects, designers and craftspeople. Prior to joining Mesh in 2011, Tim had his own architectural practice in St Petersburg for 15 years. During that time notable projects included the Morean Arts Center, Snell Arcade renovations, Z Grille Restaurant and the Skyline 5th Apartments. Long active in St. Petersburg redevelopment issues, especially within downtown, Tim has consistently advocated for initiatives that, will contribute to the city's social and economic vitality.

    Sandra J. Gadsden is the assistant metro editor/St. Petersburg and online editor of the St. Pete Times (formerly the Neighborhood Times). Gadsden also writes a weekly column that focuses on current issues and events in south Pinellas County.

    A St. Petersburg resident of more than 18 years, she was a founding board member of the Studio@620 and has served on the boards of the Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum and the Saturday Morning Market. She is a member of the Tampa Bay Association of Black Journalists (TBABJ), the Society of Professional Journalists and the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ). She was a member of the 2001 class of Leadership St. Petersburg, which is part of the local Chamber of Commerce.

    In addition, she serves on the board of directors of OC, Inc., of the United Church of Christ, which petitions the FCC for fairness in radio and television.

    Before joining the Times in July 1993, she held writing, editing and design positions at the Florida Times-Union in Jacksonville and at the Post and Courier in her hometown, Charleston, S.C.

    Maragaret Sullivan, Ph.D. has served as Regional Chancellor of the University of South Florida St. Petersburg since January 2009. Currently President of the Southeastern Consulting Group in Higher Education, Dr. Sullivan has helped more than 200 institutions and university systems in the southeastern United States as well as in Ecuador, Nicaragua, Mexico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
    Dr. Sullivan earned her doctorate degree in Educational Leadership and Psychology and her Masters of Education degree in Special Education from Georgia State University. She as written articles, book chapters, monographs, and reports related to higher education accreditation, academic planning and evaluation, information processing, learning disabilities, mental retardation and deaf services. Dr. Sullivan was recognized for her contribution to education in 2011 by the Girl Scouts of Tampa Bay, Tampa Bay Parenting Magazine and The Dali Museum.

    Our Town- Terry Tomalin

    Terry Tomalin - Journalist, Historian, Explorer and Educator Terry Tomalin moved to Florida in the spring of 1980. After graduating from the University of South Florida in 1983, he worked for a small Central Florida newspaper where his stories on the Ku Klux Klan resulted in the resignation of a local sheriff. Tomalin joined what is now the Tampa Bay Times as a police reporter in 1986 but left after 18 months to backpack through New Zealand and Australia. He returned a year later and transferred to the Sports Department to cover the Great Outdoors. Tomalin is currently the Outdoors-Fitness Editor for the Tampa Bay Times. Over the past 20 years, he has lived with witch doctors in the Amazon, explored sunken Mayan archaeological sites in Mexico, sailed to Cuba, canoed to the Bahamas and swam around Key West. A fellow of the prestigious Explorer's Club in New York City, Tomalin holds
    a Master's Degree in Florida Studies and is actively involved in many community organizations, including the Boy Scouts of America.

    Florida native William R. "Bill" Hough made his name in the world of finance as the founder of the investment banking firm, William R. Hough & Co. which he operated for 38 years. Beyond the corporate sponsorships of William R. Hough & Co., (now part of RBC Wealth Management), which won a number of national, state, and local awards for its generosity to the arts, Bill made his name in the world of philanthropy with the Hough Family Foundation giving further focus to his family's efforts in Education and the Arts.

    Among the organizations and projects Bill and his wife Hazel have supported are the University of Florida Hough Graduate School of Business and William R. Hough Hall, the Museum of Fine Arts Hazel Hough Wing, the Dalí Museum, the Canterbury School, Eckerd College, American Stage Theatre Company, the Florida Orchestra, the Palladium at St. Petersburg College, the Boy Scouts, the Boys and Girls Club Royal Theater, the YMCA, and many others.
