Sandy Hook teacher, Kaitlin Roig, described the horror of what she thought were her and pupils' final moments.
"I was thinking that I have to almost be their parent... so I said to them, I need you to know that I love you all very much and that it's going to be okay because I thought that was the last thing they were ever going to hear," she said.
In a town where there has reportedly only been one murder in the last decade, for some such a tragedy is beyond belief.
"This town is 300 years old and this is probably the worst day in the history of this town. It's hard to believe anything like this could happen in this town. It's a very quiet town," lamented Newtown resident Peter Alpi. "It's horrible that such evil exists in the United States and in Sandy Hook in particular. That's the nature of the world we live in, I guess," he added.
We may never find out what exactly happened or why but the pain and terror of what took place in Newtown will be felt right across America.

Mourners in Washington, DC held a vigil outside the White House on Friday to honor the victims of the deadly school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. Many of them were there to call for stricter gun control laws, saying that such laws are needed to prevent similar shootings from occurring in the future.
[Alice Chen, Medical Doctor]:
"I have been watching the news all day about what happened in Connecticut and I just had to come out and show my support for the families and also say that it is time for us to do something about gun violence."
Others were upset about the availability of assault weapons, which only have one purpose.
[Randall Luttenberg, Maryland Resident]:
"Assault weapons are designed to kill as many people as possible, as quickly as possible. They have no place in our society, have no place in our communities and there is no claim of rights or sport or anything that in my mind that justifies that."
Twenty-eight people, including 20 schoolchildren, were killed in the shooting rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.
Law enforcement sources have identified the gunman as 20-year-old Adam Lanza, who they say killed himself after carrying out the shooting.
President Barack Obama, wiping away tears and pausing to collect his emotions in an address to the nation, mourned the "beautiful little kids between the ages of 5 and 10 years old," who were killed.
The holiday season tragedy was the second shooting rampage in the US this week and the latest in a series of mass killings this year.

Vigils held for school shooting victims

http://www.euronews.com/ The Catholic Church in Newtown was packed on Friday evening as hundreds of grieving residents held a vigil in memory of the children and staff killed.
With a population of just 27,000 many here knew personally the victims. Monsignor Robert Weiss baptised some of the children. He told the congregation that they lit up the community better than all the Christmas lights.
Many other people who could not get into the church held improptu remembrance ceremonies to pay hommage to the victims.
Our US correspondent, Stefan Grobe, says the shooting is certain to reignite the debate over gun control: "After one of the most horrifying days in recent US history, the night has finally taken hold of this small community. But tomorrow, when the country awakes, the same old demons that keep haunting America will be back."
