Keith Quilter was shot down over the Japanese coast and rescued by a US submarine. He narrowly escaped death when his Corsair was destroyed in one of two kamikaze attacks on his aircraft carrier. His best friend Walter was shot down on a low level raid on a Japanese aerodrome, his aircraft bursting into flames right next to Keith. His journey back to the French coast was funded by the Big Lottery Fund's Heroes Return programme, which gives grants to veterans and their families for commemorative trips back to where they served.
This emotional film, one of two on the subject, featured on National Lottery Saturday draw shows during March 2013. It was also part of a wider series on Lottery funding and the good causes which are benefiting.
