Hong Kong leads Tiananmen remembrance

On June 4, 1989, a student democracy movement in Tiananmen Square was decimated by the Chinese military. 23 years later, the remembrance of massacre was led by city state of Hong Kong. The Chinese government forbids discussion of the Tiananmen crackdown but Hong Kong experiences relative social and political freedoms as a special administrative region of China, and the city has often been seen as a a hub for democracy activists seeking to preserve the spirit of the 1989 student protests.
