How to Start Seeds for a Vegetable Garden
by TheCraftyGemini 10,490 views
I just wanted to share with you the method I use for planting seeds for my vegetable garden.
I like to buy my seeds from the following online shops:
Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds: http://www.rareseeds.com
Seed Savers Exchange: http://www.seedsavers.org
Seeds of Change: http://www.seedsofchange.com
I like to start off in 72-cell trays because we plant a lot of veggies in our large garden plot. I start off with some store-bought seed starting/germinating mix. Fill my trays or small pots. I lightly tamp down each cell and then make a small hole in the center of each cell with the back of a chopstick making sure to only go about 1/4" -1/2" deep. I place 1-2 seeds in each hole and lightly cover with soil again and tamp down lightly to ensure good soil to seed contact. Then water the seeds in and place in an empty and cool oven that is completely turned off. I leave it in there for a few days checking them daily to ensure they are staying moist to aid with the germination. When the seedlings start to creep out of the top of the soil I will move the trays outdoors to give them some natural sunlight. I place my trays in a little homemade hoop house to protect them from the rain but so they still get the sunlight during the day. I bring them indoors every night to make sure no animals munch on them and put them back out first thing in the morning.
I hope you'll consider planting some seeds this season whether it be in the ground or in pots. Growing your own delicious, nutritious and organic food is fun and healthy!

How to Transplant Seedlings to Vegetable Garden
by TheCraftyGemini 5,415 views
In this organic gardening video I show you how I transplant my seedlings/starts to my garden rows. It's super easy to do and great to get the kids involved. You can wear gardening gloves if you'd like but I enjoy getting my hands dirty!
In this video I show you how I transplant bok choy and Bilko chinese cabbage starts. It's super easy to do. I simply wait until my seedlings have about 4-6 true leaves before transplanting them. Don't let them stay in the seed starting tray for too long otherwise you run the risk of having the plants become root bound. If the roots are dry when you pull the transplant out of the tray moisten it with some water before putting it in the ground. Pat some dirt around the plant and very lightly tamp down around the base of the stem. I also make sure to plant them so that they are only buried to the same level as they were in the seed starting try. Pat them down around the base lightly, water them in and that's it!

Spring 2013 Garden Prep- Carrots, Potatoes, Green beans
by TheCraftyGemini 7,262 views
We're busy getting our Spring 2013 gardens prepped and planted. We live in North Central Florida (Hardy Zone 8b).
My Fall/Winter 2012 garden is still going and we are harvesting greens pretty much every day for dinner. Things like collard greens, 3 varieties of kale, cabbage, kohlrabi, mustard greens, etc.
My youngest sister and her roommate came to visit this weekend so it was great to have the extra hands in the garden! In this video we pprep rows and plant purple haze carrots, potatoes and a TON of bush beans (Roma and Provider- heirloom green bean varieties).
My kids love to play and help in the garden and Jonathan (3) will show you how he helps us in this video as well.
We hope this video will inspire some of you to start growing your own food, too! It's so much fun for the entire family and a very rewarding activity! We love growing organic vegetables in the yard.
I also suggest you contact your local extension office and inquire about a soil test. They are inexpensive and can really make or break your entire gardening season. Based on the test results they can help you determine exactly what you should add to your soil to get it ready for a vegetable garden.
The seeds we planted can be found here:

Potatoes: were purchased from local market
Green Beans (Roma & Provider): http://bit.ly/Y59aIL and http://bit.ly/11AyRr5
Fun times on the farm!
