Detachment: DoubleThink Clip
by tribecafilm 123,365 views
Director Tony Kaye's (AMERICAN HISTORY X) long-awaited film DETACHMENT stars Academy Award® winner Adrien Brody as Henry Barthes, a substitute teacher who conveniently avoids any emotional connections by never staying anywhere long enough to form a bond with either his students or colleagues. A lost soul grappling with a troubled past, Henry finds himself at a public school where an apathetic student body has created a frustrated, burned-out administration. Inadvertently becoming a role model to his students, while also bonding with a runaway teen who is just as lost as he is, Henry finds that he's not alone in a life and death struggle to find beauty in a seemingly vicious and loveless world.

How to Write a Mission Statement That Doesn't Suck [Video]

Let's say you founded a pizza parlor. And your first idea for a mission statement is something like this: "Our mission is to serve the tastiest damn pizza in Wake County." That's pretty good. If I worked for you, I could get excited about that. Now here's how it will go off the rails. -

Self-Driving Car Test: Steve Mahan
by Google 4,494,717 views
We announced our self-driving car project in 2010 to make driving safer, more enjoyable, and more efficient. Having safely completed over 200,000 miles of computer-led driving, we wanted to share one of our favorite moments. Here's Steve, who joined us for a special drive on a carefully programmed route to experience being behind the wheel in a whole new way. We organized this test as a technical experiment, but we think it's also a promising look at what autonomous technology may one day deliver if rigorous technology and safety standards can be met.

Simon Sinek: How great leaders inspire action
by TEDtalksDirector 1,846,370 views
http://www.ted.com Simon Sinek presents a simple but powerful model for how leaders inspire action, starting with a golden circle and the question "Why?" His examples include Apple, Martin Luther King, and the Wright brothers -- and as a counterpoint Tivo, which (until a recent court victory that tripled its stock price) appeared to be struggling.

Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus || Spoken Word
by bball1989 25,170,327 views
You can preorder my new book, inspired by the poem, below!
Amazon: http://ow.ly/jNA68
Barnes & Noble: http://ow.ly/jNA8t
A poem I wrote to highlight the difference between Jesus and false religion. In the scriptures Jesus received the most opposition from the most religious people of his day. At it's core Jesus' gospel and the good news of the Cross is in pure opposition to self-righteousness/self-justification. Religion is man centered, Jesus is God-centered. This poem highlights my journey to discover this truth. Religion either ends in pride or despair. Pride because you make a list and can do it and act better than everyone, or despair because you can't do your own list of rules and feel "not good enough" for God. With Jesus though you have humble confident joy because He represents you, you don't represent yourself and His sacrifice is perfect putting us in perfect standing with God the Father.

Testing a Baseball Bat Created on a 3D Printer
by ObjetGeometries 100,866 views
We create a fully-functional baseball bat prototype on an Objet Connex Multi-Material 3D Printer and test it against a variety of objects to see if it breaks. The bat is printed in Objet's ABS-like Digital Material - a very strong and functionally versatile composite material that is unique to the Objet Connex range of 3D printers. Even though the bat has a very thin neck supporting a heavy end, it does not shatter or splinter upon hard contact with various objects.

Wayne Watson - For Such A Time As This
by Bob Marshall 2,665 views
A classic contemporary Christian song by Wayne Watson, based upon Mordecai's words to Esther in Esther 4:14. It's an encouraging song that answers the question many of us often have: "Why am I here?" The answer is in the song: "To hear the voice of God, and do His will, whatever it is." I am often reminded of this song when I am teaching Sunday School or Vacation Bible School or leading AWANA and a child sincerely says or asks something that just touches my heart and makes me realize "that's why God put me here, for such a time as this".

Long ago in a galaxy far, far away...
We bring you CELLO WARS! A result of 6 months of production...our most ambitious undertaking by far! Why Star Wars Cello? Because of our unending admiration of George Lucas, John Williams, and the most EPIC movies and film score ever created. The idea originated when Tel Stewart was editing THE CELLO SONG here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ry4BzonlVlw. As a joke he decided to add light sabers to Steven Sharp Nelson's bow during the outtakes. Fans cried out for more. Al van der Beek and Steven Sharp Nelson storyboarded the song and the video concept while they were scouting locations for MOONLIGHT http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRVvFYppU0w&feature=relmfu. But it was Steven Sharp Nelson's son Eli (6) that was the true inspiration for the project -- his enthusiasm for Star Wars, light sabers, and watching his daddy wield one while playing cello fueled the project continually.
We announced CELLO WARS on September 19, 2011 thinking we'd be able to deliver on our promise within a few weeks. We had NO IDEA. 70 days later, more than 7,000 frames, 72 audio tracks, 24 hours of filming through the night in front of a green screen, the most props and costumes we've ever used, several broken bows and strings, and over 1,000 hours of editing and rendering -- we felt like we had taken on the entire EMPIRE!
Tel Stewart is THE MAN. He is the reason this worked. He is the man behind the green screen -- behind the editing bay -- behind all the cool effects. He had to edit every single frame in order to make the light sabers work (a total of over 7,000 frames)! We now have a Piano Guys Hall of Fame and he was recently the first inductee.
Original music composed by the AMAZING John Williams
Arrangement written and produced by Al van der Beek & Steven Sharp Nelson
Recorded, mixed & mastered by Al van der Beek at TPG Studios
Steven Sharp Nelson: Electric Cellos/Vocals/Percussion
Al van der Beek: Vocals/percussion
Starring Steven Sharp Nelson and his Doppelganger (Jedi/Sith),

About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations) -

The Day The LOLcats Died - #SOPA #PIPA Protest Song
by LaughPong 935,419 views
SOPA and PIPA are two examples of recent legislation that is lethal to the internet as we know it. The internet rose up and is on its way to successfully fighting them off, but we need to stay vigilant.
The only way to prevent legislation like this from being passed in the future is to call your Congressmen and tell them. Make it clear that you don't support SOPA, you don't support PIPA, and that you won't support future legislation that damages the stability of the internet.

Lyrics:
A long, long time ago
On the world's largest network of interconnected computers,
Those lolcats used to make me laugh.
And I knew I could make a joke
And not be sued by nasty folk
On the RIAA's behalf
Then along came SOPA/PIPA
The internet's very own grim reaper
users could not edit
Ars Technica and Reddit
Tumblr, Gawker, Hacker News,
and Something Awful sang the blues,
Every login was refused,
The day the lolcats died
Why, why are laws a thing you can buy?
They got paid off, should be laid off, re-election denied
Our web means more than lawyers, lobbies and lies
So speak up before the internet dies
Speak up before the internet dies
Can you write a decent law
Do you care 'bout copyright at all?
Or just winning back your seat
Content will begin to ebb
You'll watch the slow death of the web
You'll be left with nothing more to tweet
Well, I know it's looking pretty grim
Cuz' they'll tear our culture limb from limb
There's too much damn support
Oh this law we must abort
Oh-oh we can't let lobbies run amok
With our series of tubes and that big dump truck
I know some folks who oughta give a fuck
The day the lolcats die
I hear you singin',
Why, why are laws a thing you can buy?
They got paid off, should be laid off, re-election denied
Our web means more than lawyers, lobbies and lies
So speak up before the internet dies
Speak up before the internet dies -

Spreaker: broadcast live audio from you iPhone
by building43 4,019 views
I've always wanted my own, live radio show, but creating such a broadcast has typically involved lots of equipment, technical staff and coordination between the two. Now it's easier than ever with a new app called Spreaker, which allows you to broadcast high quality audio over the Internet with nothing more than the microphone on your iPhone.
"What we do is we help people to create their own audio content," explains Francesco Bashieri, Co-founder and CEO of Spreaker, "their own radio show or their own podcast, broadcast it live to their social networks and actually monetize that content."
While there are other companies that provide technology that enables live broadcasting, Bashieri believes that Spreaker has a competitive advantage.
"We compete on the quality of the broadcast—much better quality—and on the ease of use..." says Brashieri. "It has to do with the infrastructure and the backbone. We actually chose to stream on 128 kilobits stereo, and it's somehow more resource intensive, but we think that the quality in this kind of application is very important. Other guys are doing 32 kilobits, and you can feel it. It's like listening on the phone."
Spreaker offers both streaming and pre-recorded capabilities. With live streaming, the audience can interact with you and each other as the broadcast is taking place. They can post questions and get answers in real-time.
You can embed the Spreaker player on any third party web site and customize it, similar to YouTube. You also have the ability to download broadcasts as MP3 files, and use iTunes-compatible RSS feeds to syndicate the content pretty much anywhere. Spreaker is available as both a free service with ads and a premium service, which eliminates ads, while providing more storage and bandwidth.
"What we figured out is that the podcasting ecosystem is currently flawed," explains Bashieri, "because it's very difficult. People have to source all their tools from different parts and somehow stitch them together. They need to deal with technology, they need to deal with hosting and bandwidth, [and] they need to do promotion. They have no idea how to monetize this, and this is what we are all about. We want to help those people."

After our Taylor Swift Coldplay mash-up, lots of people wanted more song combos. This led us to the creation of a cool hip hop/classical mash-up, but again we could not get permission. Instead of scrapping the great ideas, we used them to create an original tune. You will hear influences and inspiration from other artists. Try and guess them.
On the recording, Steven Sharp Nelson laid down over 100 tracks including cello textures never known possible. Every single sound on the video was made using only the instruments shown: piano, cello, mouth percussion and kick drum. We utilized some cool effects on lots of stuff...for example the U2-style delay on Steve's pizzicato at the beginning.
The extra string on the electric cellos (the black cello has an extra high string and the white cello has an extra low string) allowed us to cover the full range of the orchestra. The deep bass drum sound is a bump on the body of the cello with a little help from some effects. The shaker sound was created by Steve rubbing rosin on his bow. The record scratch is Steve scratching a quarter on the strings...you get the idea.
Special SPECIAL thanks to Paul Anderson and Tel Stewart "The Piano Guys" who put as much of themselves into the video as we did and without whom the video would never have happened. (please "Like" them on facebook, they are awesome!!!) http://www.facebook.com/PianoGuys

First Follower: Leadership Lessons from Dancing Guy
by Derek Sivers 2,203,433 views
Official transcript at http://sivers.org/ff
---
If you've learned a lot about leadership and making a movement, then let's watch a movement happen, start to finish, in under 3 minutes, and dissect some lessons:
A leader needs the guts to stand alone and look ridiculous. But what he's doing is so simple, it's almost instructional. This is key. You must be easy to follow!
Now comes the first follower with a crucial role: he publicly shows everyone how to follow. Notice the leader embraces him as an equal, so it's not about the leader anymore - it's about them, plural. Notice he's calling to his friends to join in. It takes guts to be a first follower! You stand out and brave ridicule, yourself. Being a first follower is an under-appreciated form of leadership. The first follower transforms a lone nut into a leader. If the leader is the flint, the first follower is the spark that makes the fire.
The 2nd follower is a turning point: it's proof the first has done well. Now it's not a lone nut, and it's not two nuts. Three is a crowd and a crowd is news.
A movement must be public. Make sure outsiders see more than just the leader. Everyone needs to see the followers, because new followers emulate followers - not the leader.
Now here come 2 more, then 3 more. Now we've got momentum. This is the tipping point! Now we've got a movement!
As more people jump in, it's no longer risky. If they were on the fence before, there's no reason not to join now. They won't be ridiculed, they won't stand out, and they will be part of the in-crowd, if they hurry. Over the next minute you'll see the rest who prefer to be part of the crowd, because eventually they'd be ridiculed for not joining.
And ladies and gentlemen that is how a movement is made! Let's recap what we learned:
If you are a version of the shirtless dancing guy, all alone, remember the importance of nurturing your first few followers as equals, making everything clearly about the movement, not you.
Be public. Be easy to follow!
But the biggest lesson here - did you catch it?
Leadership is over-glorified.
Yes it started with the shirtless guy, and he'll get all the credit, but you saw what really happened:
It was the first follower that transformed a lone nut into a leader.
There is no movement without the first follower.
We're told we all need to be leaders, but that would be really ineffective.
The best way to make a movement, if you really care, is to courageously follow and show others how to follow.
When you find a lone nut doing something great, have the guts to be the first person to stand up and join in.
