SUGARCREEK TOWNSHIP (WDTN) - A single car crash on Interstate 675 shut down the southbound lanes in Sugarcreek Twp. for six hours Aug. 23.
Brennan S. Eden, 19, of Mason, Ohio, lost control of his car and slammed into the concrete pillar of a bridge south of Indian Ripple Road about 7:15 a.m.
The force of the crash broke the car into three pieces and Brennan was ejected.
Witnesses said moments before the crash, Brennan was passing other drivers at speeds of at least 100 mph. He crashed when he drove off the left side of the roadway while passing a Sugarcreek Twp. police car. The crash was caught on that officer's cruiser camera.
"He went down into the median, into the grass, hit the guardrail, went airborne and the car hit the center post of the bridge and literally exploded into three main pieces," said witness Mark Riley.
Police said Brennan was alert and conscious after the crash and was flown to Miami Valley Hospital by Careflight where he was last listed in critical condition.
"He is very lucky to still be alive at this point," said Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. Marty Fellure. "You can see behind me the impact he took and where he got ejected and landed, he's a very fortunate man right now."
Fellure said they are still investigating the crash trying to determine the driver's speed and why he was passing cars on the berm. -

Esther Rincón perdió a su hijo, Juan Calleja, de 22 años, en un accidente de tráfico en Tres Cantos (Madrid) el 18 de octubre del año pasado. Ella está convencida de que el mal estado de la carretera causó el siniestro y presentó una denuncia contra Fomento por la existencia de ese punto negro, una curva de la autovía madrileña M-607 donde se producen numerosos accidentes.
Aconsejada por su abogado, el pasado fin de semana Esther convenció a su pareja, Carles para ir a grabar el lugar del accidente. Cuando Carles registraba las imágenes desde dentro del coche de Esther, un vehículo les adelantó y en esa misma curva se estrelló contra la valla antes de quedar boca abajo más allá del arcén.
"Esther estaba pensando en su hijo. Le decía 'Juanito, dime cómo pasó el accidente. Envíame alguna señal'. Y yo, que no soy creyente y que estoy grabando el vídeo, veo cómo en aquel instante el coche que nos adelanta se sale de la misma curva", explica Carles
Todos los servicios de emergencia lo sabían
"Dejé de grabar y fuimos enseguida a ayudar a los heridos. Iban dos personas dentro que sufrieron contusiones. Llamamos al 112 y vinieron las grúas, la Guardia Civil, los Bomberos y la ambulancia. Todos decían que no paraban de acudir a esa misma curva por los numerosos accidentes que se producen", asegura Carles , soprendido aún por la coincidencia del pasado sábado pese a haber vivido numerosas situaciones límite por su trabajo, especialmente cuando ha acudido a conflictos bélicos con su cámara.
La curva trágica en la que murió Juan Calleja con sólo 22 años está en el kilómetro 28,800 de la M-607. El día en que falleció se dirigía a arbitrar un partido de baloncesto. En la entrada de la curva no había ninguna señal de peligro ni de limitación de velocidad (hace pocas semanas han puesto un disco de 80, que se ve en el vídeo). La familia del chico está convencida de que el asfalto está en malas condiciones, la curva es peligrosa y encima está mal peraltada, lo que causa los siniestros.
"Esperamos que con la denuncia y ahora con el vídeo la arreglen para que nadie más se accidente", afirma Carles, quien aún recuerda haber visto el pasado sábado en la misma curva restos de numerosos coches accidentados. "Parecía el suelo de un desguace", recuerda. Fue él mismo quien decidió colgar su vídeo en Youtube el mismo pasado fin de semana. Sólo espera, junto a Esther, que a partir de ahora nadie más se accidente en esa absurda curva.

Elgin Firefighter rescues toddler from burning home

a 2 year old toddler was saved by Elgin Firefighters this afternoon when a basement fire, quickly engulfed the entire front of the home at 517 Cumberland Trail. The call came in as a basement fire and upon arrival of the FD, there was light to moderate smoke coming from a front basement window. That smoke quickly turned to flames and within 2 minutes, had most of the front of the house engulfed in flames. Elgin Firefighter Kevin Hartmann was one of the first firefighters inside the house and when checking the kitchen, found the toddler still in his high-chair as smoke covered the ceiling. Shortly after he escaped with the child, the entire kitchen was filled with smoke and fire had spread to the attic of the home. Police later arrested the father for starting to fight with firefighters as they tried to extinguish the blaze.
UPDATE Nov. 2012:
This story is so F'd up on multiple levels.....this is an update that is long overdue.
What you're seeing in this video is what FFs saw at the time they pulled up. I pulled up at the same time the ambulance did, and then the first Engine arrived. I arrived (I am not a FF!) within 30 seconds of the call. This fire spread fast because a pile of clothes were lit on fire, in the bedroom at that window. Firefighters were not going to put a line on it and start hosing down the house because they were being told that there were people inside the house still. (even after the child was saved!)
Unbelievably.....this bonehead was not convicted for AggArson. Prosecutors couldn't make their case. (video and all!). He was however convicted on several other unrelated charges and given 9 years.
