This playlist is for Aung San Suu Kyi, a courageous freedom fighter in Burma.
------------------------------ Aung San Suu Kyi is known all over the world as a human rights advocate and the leader of the democractic movement in the country of Burma. She is the daughter of the leader of the Burmese Independence movement in the 1940's and eventually negotiated the country's independence, General Aung San. Suu Kyi is considered internationally as the legitimate leader of Burma, with the position as Prime Minister-elect. Since 1988, she is the figurehead of Burma's Democracy Movement, leading and founding the National League of Democracy. The junta placed her under house arrest because they said that she was "a disturbance to the peace of the state." But, the true reason is that, they know that she has the power to bring democracy, justice, and peace to the country with the power of the people. To this day, Aung San Suu Kyi, now 63 years old, is still under house arrest, still fighting for freedom, justice, peace, and the rights of the people of Burma. I, as a fellow Freedom-lover from a freedom-loving country, must try to help, even in the smallest of ways, the country of Burma get the freedom they deserve. Aung San Suu Kyi and the Burmese people must be freed from oppression, hatred and violence.... NOW. "The world knows better that we are still prisoners in our own country." - Daw Aung San Suu Kyi Be in solidarity with Aung San Suu Kyi and Burma! Together we can give help them achieve FREEDOM! |

Ninoy Aquino was a freedom fighter who did his best to let the Philippines be a country of democracy once again.
Benigno "Ninoy" S. Aquino, Jr. is one of the Philippines' most admired modern heroes for his courageous fight for freedom for the Filipinos during the Marcos Regime. Ninoy became a senator during President Ferdinand Marcos' administration. He was the most famous political critic of Marcos. Aquino criticized the corruption in Marcos' government, the unfinished or unsuccessful national projects and the luxurious life of his wife, Imelda. Ferdinand Marcos began his presidency in 1965, and with his fame and success during his first term, he won again a second term in 1969 as head of state. During his second term, that was when the troubles began. In 1972, he declared Martial Law over the Philippines and imprisoned student leaders, rebels, activists, political critics and opposition leaders including Ninoy Aquino. President Marcos imprisoned Aquino for more than 7 years. During that time, Ninoy began a forty-day hunger strike and that was when he made a great renewal of his faith. In 1980, still imprisoned, Aquino suffered a heart attack. Marcos and his wife, Imelda saw this as an opportunity to get him out of the country. Ninoy saw this as an opportunity for freedom. He was sent to the United States for a heart operation, and stayed there for three years in self - exile (1980 - 1983) with his family. Aquino made a promise to Marcos that he will not criticize the Marcos Government while in the United States. But he broke that promise as he said that it was "a pact with the devil". While in the US, he joined organizations that campaigned for Filipino democracy and made powerful speeches against the regime. His wife, Cory, said that it was the happiest years of the family. In 1983, he decided to go back to the Philippines. With international journalists and his brother-in-law by his side, Ninoy went to the Philippines on-board numerous flights from places like Boston, Singapore, Malaysia, and Taiwan. The flight from Taipei was his last flight to the country. On August 21, 1983, he arrived at the Manila International Airport on-board a China Airlines flight. As Ninoy was escorted from the plane by soldiers to the tarmac, gunshots were heard, two men lay dying on the tarmac, and Ninoy was one of them. He was assasinated. To this day, no one still knows who was the mastermind of his murder. Filipinos cried for freedom and justice during his funeral procession, attended by more than two million people. Aquino's death trigerred the start of the protests that led to Ferdinand Marcos' downfall after the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution and the start of the restoration of democratic institutions under the new leadership of Corazon Aquino, Ninoy's widow. Ninoy Aquino is truly a hero, a hero who fought for democracy, freedom, and justice. His legacy should always be remembered in the hearts of the Filipino people. Even though the democracy we have now in our country is not perfect, we should still be thankful that we have the freedom we truly deserve as a nation. "The Filipino is worth dying for." - Ninoy Aquino 1932 - 1983 |
