The hymn of our grandfathers & fathers following World War One, presented with the shadows of war amid the cemeteries & cenotaphs that hallow their sacrifice. A haunting reminder of the legacy of the generations whose 'name liveth forever' even as, in this generation, so many more 'valiant hearts' go to war. Three different renderings of the hymn, highlighted by the singing of the Chapel Choir of the Royal Hospital, Chelsea. A resource from Piddingworth Remembrance and a tribute to Sgt. E. M. Leonard, my grandfather, who fought at the Somme and Sgt. Raymond E. Leonard, his son, who fought at Dieppe & Falaise.
O valiant hearts who to your glory came Through dust of conflict and through battle flame; Tranquil you lie, your knightly virtue proved, Your memory hallowed in the land you loved.
Proudly you gathered, rank on rank, to war As who had heard Gods message from afar; All you had hoped for, all you had, you gave, To save mankind—yourselves you scorned to save.
Splendid you passed, the great surrender made; Into the light that nevermore shall fade; Deep your contentment in that blest abode, Who wait the last clear trumpet call of God.
Long years ago, as earth lay dark and still, Rose a loud cry upon a lonely hill, While in the frailty of our human clay, Christ, our Redeemer, passed the self same way.
Still stands His Cross from that dread hour to this, Like some bright star above the dark abyss; Still, through the veil, the Victors pitying eyes Look down to bless our lesser Calvaries.
These were His servants, in His steps they trod, Following through death the martyred Son of God: Victor, He rose; victorious too shall rise They who have drunk His cup of sacrifice.
O risen Lord, O Shepherd of our dead, Whose cross has bought them and Whose staff has led, In glorious hope their proud and sorrowing land Commits her children to Thy gracious hand.

This hymn has long been embraced by serving and veteran members of the armed forces. With it's comforting words and soulful tune, it is especially sung at Remembrance and funerals. This video focuses on the generations of servicemen & women and their families who have endured the pain, suffering & horror of war and the loss of comrades and those so dear. It is movingly sung by a Welsh Male Voice Choir. Abide with me; fast falls the eventide; The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide. When other helpers fail and comforts flee, Help of the helpless, O abide with me. Swift to its close ebbs out lifes little day; Earth's joys grow dim; its glories pass away; Change and decay in all around I see; O Thou who changest not, abide with me. I need Thy presence every passing hour. What but Thy grace can foil the tempter's power? Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me. Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes; Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies. Heaven's morning breaks, and earths vain shadows flee; In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.

Highlighting the people, places and gifts that are celebrated at piddingworth.com. Family, Faith, Duty & Remembrance. From the stone ruins of a house on the South Downs of Sussex came the spirit toward advancing and promoting our British and Christian inheritance in Western Civilisation. Motto: God Whose I am. God Whom I Serve. 'Honour All Men. Love the Brotherhood. Fear God. Honour The King'.

This magnificent hymn, written by Isaac Watts and music by William Croft with the great tune, 'St. Anne', was inspired by Psalm 90 and is a prayer of confident hope, especially in time of trouble, to the unchanging and eternal God who is our loving provider, protector and promised destiny. Sung beautifully by the Choir of King's College, Cambridge with reflections of passing time in the midst of the foundations of faith.
