Joy Division formed in 1976 in Salford, Greater Manchester. Originally named Warsaw rapidly evolved from their initial punk rock influences, to develop a sound and style that pioneered the post-punk movement of the late 1970s. Their debut album, Unknown Pleasures, was released in 1979 on Tony Wilson's independent record label Factory Records. In May 1980, on the eve of the band's first American tour, Ian, overwhelmed with depression, committed suicide. Joy Division's posthumously released their second album, Closer (1980), and the single "Love Will Tear Us Apart" became the band's highest charting releases. After the death of Ian, the remaining members reformed as New Order, achieving critical and commercial success.

Led Zeppelin
Led Zeppelin
• Jimmy Page
• John Paul Jones
• Robert Plant
• John Bonham
Led Zeppelin were a Hard Rock band formed in 1968 by Jimmy Page (guitar), Robert Plant (vocals), John Paul Jones (bass guitar, keyboards) and John Bonham (drums). With their heavy, guitar-driven sound, Led Zeppelin are regarded as one of the first Heavy Metal bands. However, the band's individualistic style draws from many sources and transcends any one genre. Their Rock-infused interpretation of the Blues and Folk genres also incorporated Rockabilly, Reggae, Soul, Funk, Classical, Celtic, Indian, Arabic, Pop, Latin and Country. The band did not release the popular songs from their albums as singles in the UK, as they preferred to develop the concept of album-oriented Rock. Led Zeppelin concerts could last more than three hours, with expanded, improvised live versions of their song repertoire.
Close to 30 years after disbanding following Bonham's death in 1980, the band continues to be held in high regard for their artistic achievements, commercial success and broad influence. The band have sold more than 300 million albums worldwide, including 111.5 million sales in the United States and they have had all of their original studio albums reach the U.S. Billboard Top 10, with six reaching the number one spot. Led Zeppelin are ranked No. 1 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock. Rolling Stone magazine has described Led Zeppelin as "the heaviest band of all time" and "the biggest band of the 70s".
On 10 December 2007 the surviving members of Led Zeppelin reunited (along with deceased drummer John Bonham's son Jason) for the Ahmet Ertegün Tribute Concert at The O2 Arena in London.

"What thing is love?--for (well I wot) love is a thing
It is a prick, it is a sting,
It is a pretty, pretty thing;
It is a fire, it is a coal,
Whose flame creeps in at every hole!" ~ George Peele (1556-1596), THE HUNTING OF CUPID (1591)

"Jamaican Music"'s videos in chronological order. Up to 33 hours of music and videos.... R&B, Jazz, Blues, Mento, Calypso, Sound Systems, Toasting, Ska, Rocksteady, Reggae, Roots Reggae, Dub, Lovers Rock, Dancehall, Dub Poetry, Reggaeton, Ragga, Ragga Hip Hop, Ragga Jungle, Raggacore.
Mento, influenced by the musical traditions of the African slaves and the European music, predates and has greatly influenced Ska and Reggae. It features acoustic instruments, such as acoustic guitar, banjo, hand drums, and the rhumba box, and shares many similarities with Calypso. The lyrics deal with aspects of everyday life. Its golden age was the 1950s.
Sound System is a group of DJs, engineers and MCs playing Ska, Rocksteady or Reggae. Toasting, Chatting, or DeeJaying is the act of talking or chanting over a rhythm or beat.
Ska, combining elements of Mento and Calypso with Jazz and Rhythm and Blues, originated in Jamaica in the late 1950s, and was the precursor to Rocksteady and Reggae. It is characterized by a walking bass line accented with rhythms on the offbeat. In they 1960s, Ska became the dominant music genre of Jamaica.
Successor to Ska and precursor to Reggae, Rocksteady is a music genre that was most popular in Jamaica since 1966. It differs from Ska for the slower tempo, the bass is heavier and more prominent in the mix and in addition. Its lyrics mainly dealt with love and the Rude Boy culture.
Reggae is a music genre first developed in Jamaica in the late 1960s following on the development of Ska and Rocksteady. Reggae is based on a rhythmic style characterized by regular beats on the off-beat, known as the Skank. Reggae is normally slower than Ska, and usually has accents on the third beat in each bar. Reggae song lyrics deal with religion, love, sexuality, relationships, poverty, injustice and other social and political issues.
Roots Reggae concerns itself with the life of the ghetto sufferer, and the rural poor. Lyrical themes include poverty, social issues, resistance to government oppression, repatriation, and Rastafari.
Lovers Rock is a style of Reggae noted for its romantic sound and content. It combined the smooth soul sounds of Chicago and Philadelphia Soul with Reggae basslines and rhythms.
Dub is a form of music evolved from Reggae that consists of instrumental remixes of existing recordings and is achieved by significantly manipulating and reshaping the recordings by removing the vocals, emphasizing the drum and bass frequencies or 'riddim', adding extensive echo and reverb effects, panoramic LR delay, and dubbing occasional snippets of lyrics from the original version.
Dancehall developed in the late 1970s, initially as a more sparse and less political and religious variant of Reggae than the roots style that had dominated much of the 1970s.
Dub Poetry is a form of performance poetry of West Indian origin, which evolved into Dub music consisting of spoken word over Reggae rhythms.
Raggamuffin or simply Ragga is a sub-genre of Dancehall and Reggae, in which the instrumentation consists of electronic music, and with a DJ chatting and sampling.

TM7 MG: Punk Rock
The Magnificent Seven Series; Music Genres: Punk Rock
"Punk Rock"'s videos in chronological order. Up to 33 hours of music and videos....
Punk Rock (often referred to simply as Punk) is an anti-establishment Rock music genre and movement that developed between 1974 and 1976 in the United Kingdom, United States and Australia. Rooted in garage rock and other forms of what is now known as Protopunk music, Punk Rock bands eschewed the perceived excesses of mainstream 1970s Rock. They created fast, hard-edged music, typically with short songs, stripped-down instrumentation, and often political, anti-government lyrics. Punk embraces a DIY (Do It Yourself) ethic, with many bands self-producing their recordings and distributing them through informal channels.
By late 1976, bands such as the Ramones, in New York City, and the Sex Pistols and The Clash, in London, were recognized as the vanguard of a new musical movement. The following year saw Punk Rock spreading around the world. Punk quickly, though briefly, became a major cultural phenomenon in the United Kingdom. For the most part, Punk took root in local scenes that tended to reject association with the mainstream. An associated Punk subculture emerged, expressing youthful rebellion and characterized by distinctive clothing styles and a variety of anti-authoritarian ideologies.
By the beginning of the 1980s, even faster, more aggressive styles such as hardcore and Oi! had become the predominant mode of Punk Rock. Musicians identifying with or inspired by Punk also pursued a broad range of other variations, giving rise to Postpunk and the Alternative Rock movement. By the turn of the century, new Pop Punk bands such as Green Day were bringing the genre widespread popularity decades after its inception.
