Dikembe Mutombo wouldn't let his former teammates get their way.
Mutombo had 13 points, 13 rebounds and nine blocked shots and Allen Iverson scored 47 points as the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Atlanta Hawks 108-103 Friday night.
The Hawks have lost 10 straight, including nine since trading Mutombo to Philadelphia in a five-player deal on Feb. 22.
"I kept running into them and they kept telling me they were going to dunk on me," said Mutombo, who is living at the same hotel that Atlanta stayed at in downtown Philadelphia. "I kept telling them during the course of the game, 'Why are you even trying?"
Jason Terry had 25 points and Nazr Mohammed, who was sent to Atlanta along with Theo Ratliff, Toni Kukoc and Pepe Sanchez for Mutombo, scored a career-high 18. Kukoc and DerMarr Johnson each had 12.
Eric Snow had 12 points and 13 assists, Tyrone Hill had 12 points and nine rebounds and George Lynch had eight points and 12 rebounds for Philadelphia, which improved the NBA's best record to 46-16.
"It felt funny playing against guys you played with all year," Iverson said. "You look left, you look right and there are guys that were always right there in the foxhole with you, who felt bad when you felt bad. It was tough."
Iverson, who scored 40 or more points for the 16th time this season, had 17 in the first quarter and 16 in the third. He made eight straight shots in one stretch and finished 16-of-30.
The Sixers led by as many as 17 late in the third, but Atlanta closed within 93-89 with an 11-0 run in the fourth. Terry had seven of the 11 points, including the last five.
Mutombo ended a scoreless drought of 3:17 with a slam, but the Hawks scored six straight after a jumper by Snow to cut it to 101-99 with 1:11 left.
After Mohammed's layup made it 103-101, Snow put it away with a 15-footer that gave the Sixers a 105-101 lead with a 31 seconds left.
"We fought like crazy to get back into it," Atlanta coach Lon Kruger said. "We are disappointed by not quite finishing. It was a great effort down the stretch, but not quite enough."
Mutombo recorded his fifth straight double-double and sixth in seven games with the Sixers. He had five blocks in the third quarter and got a key rebound late in the game when the Hawks had a chance to tie.
"If (Mutombo) does every night what he did tonight, we'll be very satisfied," Sixers coach Larry Brown said.
Atlanta took its first lead since the opening minutes, 48-46, on a jumper by Mohammed with 3:28 left in the second quarter.
Iverson's jumper and driving layup capped a 9-4 run, giving the Sixers a 55-52 lead at halftime.
After the Hawks cut it to 65-59 midway through the third, Iverson drilled a 3-pointer, assisted on a layup by Snow and hit another 3-pointer to give Philadelphia a 73-64 lead.
"That's a dream, best team in the league, a team that you played for in their house," Mohammed said about his performance. "You couldn't write it up any better."
Notes The Sixers are 19-14 overall, including 12-4 this season, when Iverson scores 40 points or more. Philadelphia center Matt Geiger missed his second straight game with swelling in the right knee. Geiger has played just 17 games due to injuries. Kukoc, a starter since going to Atlanta, was booed throughout the night. Hawks center Lorenzen Wright left the game with a sprained right thumb in the second quarter and did not return. Philadelphia is 24-2 when it scores 100 points or more.

Gerald Wallace put a big hurt on Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson.
Wallace had 25 points, 13 rebounds and one very big block in the final minute as the Charlotte Bobcats handed the Denver Nuggets their third straight loss, 105-101 Monday night.
Iverson (31 points) and Anthony (25) bounced back from a poor shooting night against New Jersey on Saturday night, when they were a combined 11-for-33. But they both got banged up against the Bobcats with Iverson spraining his right ankle and Anthony spraining his left wrist.
Anthony said he's sore but fine and will play Wednesday night at Portland.
Iverson sounded a lot less confident in his status.
"The way I feel right now, I don't know if I would miss a game. I just will have to get up and see how I feel tomorrow," Iverson said. "Right now it's just frustrating to be out there at the end hobbling like that."
X-rays on Iverson's puffy ankle were negative.
Iverson and Anthony are 2-3 together, and their pairing since Melo's return from a 15-game suspension for fighting hasn't been the problem for the Nuggets, who failed for the second time in three nights to gain ground on division-leading Utah.
Rather, it's incorporating newcomer Steve Blake into the mix and having players J.R. Smith, Eduardo Najera, Linas Kleiza and Yakhouba Diawara adjust to their new, reduced roles, coach George Karl said.
"When things were going good, everybody was saying it was working right away, but it's going to take some time," said Anthony. "I don't want to make any excuses right now but it is going to take some time. I'm back off of a 30 days' (absence) and I'm still trying to get my rhythm, get my flow. My teammates are trying to get used to me back out there on the court. When I was out, they had different roles out there."
Charlotte capitalized on the disarray to win for just the eighth time in 24 road games.
"It was not a bad loss," Karl insisted. "We played a very good team."
That's a point Bobcats coach Bernie Bickerstaff has been preaching. Ten of his team's 16 wins have come against teams with winning records.
"I say we have a bad record, but we're not a bad basketball team," Bickerstaff said.
With the Bobcats ahead 102-101, Anthony came down with the ball that was bobbled around following a miss by Adam Morrison and he darted for the other end only to get rejected by Wallace.
"I went for steal then but couldn't reach it, so I kept going and blocked him," Wallace said.
Wallace then misfired at the other end, but Raymond Felton got the long rebound, was fouled by Anthony and sank both shots with 16 seconds left for a 104-101 lead.
Smith's off-balance 3-pointer was off-target with 6 seconds left and Jeff McInnis sank one of two free throws to ice it.
Before the game, Bickerstaff was lamenting his lack of a clutch player to close out games. "What we lack is a difference maker. A guy to go to down the stretch. We don't have a Kobe or a Carter to give the ball all the time with the game on the line," he said.
But he had plenty of players step up on this night.
Charlotte trailed 97-94 when Wallace hit a free throw, Morrison (12 points) swished a 3-pointer from the top of the key and Wallace swooped in for a tip-in to give the Bobcats a 100-97 lead with 2:26 remaining.
Iverson's three-point play tied it at 100 but the Nuggets wouldn't lead again, befuddled by Charlotte's strong defense and opportunistic offense.
Emeka Okafor added 18 points, 10 boards and five blocks and Felton scored 16 for Charlotte, which took an 81-79 lead into the fourth quarter and didn't fade this time.
"We play better against the elite teams in the league," Matt Carroll said. "We play fearless like we have nothing to lose."
Iverson said the key to ending Denver's skid is to step up on defense.
"Defense got us back into the game, that was evident," Iverson said. "It was easy to see that, that was when the crowd got back into the game, that's when we got into the game. That should be a sign to show what we can do when we play defense. When you play good defense, it turns into excellent offense."
Game notes Bobcats C-F Othella Harrington sat out with a sore left knee, which he hurt at shootaround. ... The Nuggets fell to 12-12 at home and are 13-11 against teams with losing records.

Reggie Miller wasn't thinking about a tie. He was going for a win all the way.
In his latest heroic postseason moment, Miller nailed a 3-pointer with 2.9 seconds left to lift the Indiana Pacers to a 79-78 comeback victory over the Philadelphia 76ers in Game 1 of their first-round playoff series Saturday. Miller, who had missed 16 of his first 20 shots, came around a screen and took a pass from Jalen Rose before launching a 3-pointer from 25 feet that rattled in.
"On the road I always go for 3," said Miller, whose career highlights include several clutch 3-pointers at the end of games -- especially in the playoffs.
"I knew it was coming. You knew it was coming. The crowd knew it was coming."
The Sixers had a final chance, but Allen Iverson lost his dribble with Miller closely guarding him and couldn't get a shot off as time expired.
"We got to a point where we felt we had these guys beat," Iverson said. "We got tight. To get a big lead like that and lose it at home is ridiculous."
Indiana, the defending Eastern Conference champions and prohibitive underdogs against Philadelphia, lead the best-of-five series 1-0. Game 2 is Tuesday night at the First Union Center.
Miller had 17 points and Jermaine O'Neal added 12 points and a career-high 20 rebounds for Indiana, which rallied from an 18-point second-half deficit. Travis Best had 16 points and 10 assists.
"We let the world know, we let them know, we can beat them on their own court," O'Neal said.
Iverson, who won his second scoring title in three years by averaging 31.1 points per game, had just 16 points. Aaron McKie added 18 and Dikembe Mutombo had 12 points and 22 rebounds.
Philadelphia, the top team in the East, is seeking to avenge two straight playoff defeats to Indiana.
"We gave them too many shots and I don't think we went inside enough," Mutombo said. "We had a lot of opportunities, but we didn't take advantage of them. Their big men were in foul trouble and we didn't take advantage of that either. I'm not happy at all at the way we lost this game."
The Pacers took their first lead, 73-72, since the opening minutes on a jumper by Best midway through the fourth. After Iverson answered with a jumper, Miller hit a 3-pointer to give the Pacers a 76-74 lead with 3:21 left.
Mutombo tied it at 76 on a pair of free throws with two minutes left. After Rose missed a jumper, Snow scored on a driving layup to make it 78-76.
Indiana missed four shots, including three 3-pointers, on its ensuing possession, but McKie missed an off-balance driving layup and O'Neal got the rebound with 11.7 seconds left.
Miller then drilled his third 3-pointer of the game to notch the upset.
"The situation called for big-time players to step up," Rose said. "I've seen him hit that shot numerous times."
Said Miller, "Shooters shoot. I understood I was having an off day."
Iverson shot just 7-of-19 and wasn't too thrilled about going to the bench after committing his fourth foul with 7:40 left in the third. He stared at Sixers coach Larry Brown and didn't join a team huddle during an ensuing timeout.
Iverson returned less than three minutes later, made a driving layup and hit a short jumper to give the Sixers a 65-54 lead late in the third after Indiana had cut its deficit to single digits for the first time since the first quarter.
"We got real tentative and they made big plays," Brown said. "We didn't make many shots in the second half and we made some critical mistakes. We took a shot too soon and we have to be a lot smarter."
Philadelphia used a 12-2 run -- none of the points from Iverson -- to open its first double-digit lead of the game, 18-8, with 2:39 left in the first.
Indiana missed its first eight shots before Rose hit a short jumper 3:20 into the game.
Miller made just one of his first 10 shots and was 2-for-12 in the first half. The Pacers were 15-for-51 in the first half.
"With a guy like that, you never worry about what he's done early," Pacers coach Isiah Thomas said.
Neither Iverson nor Miller scored until Miller made a driving layup with 2:05 left in the first. Iverson then scored on a driving finger roll with 1:38 left. He had as many assists -- four -- as shots in the first.
Notes: Miller shot just 3-for-14 in his last game in Philadelphia on April 1. ... O'Neal got a technical foul for taunting after a slam dunk early in the second quarter. ... Iverson hit a layup with 1:38 left in the first and the clock didn't restart until Austin Croshere made a layup on the ensuing possession.
