Never Give Up Hope! pchsva - 145 views - 1 year ago
Monty was at the Pulaski Shelter a long time awaiting that perfect home. We all knew what a great dog he was. Volunteers had taken him to many events where he loved to play with other dogs and kissed everyone he met.

Monty was adopted Tuesday, June 24th! His new family says "he is the best dog".

Here is a video of Monty visiting the shelter the very next day after adoption. He was doing really well learning to stay in his "new ride"

Guinea Pig Care pchsva - 1,302 views - 1 year ago
2 guinea pigs could not be cared for by their owner, so they were relinquished to our shelter. This video shows their original setup, and a better setup provided once they came under our care. This setup is temporary! Piggies should have lots of space and hay/greens/fruits to eat. Please search online for specific diet and housing requirements.

These pigs were placed in rescue with Cave Spring Piggie Rescue in Roanoke, VA.

The Birth of the New Pulaski County Animal Shelter pchsva - 1,741 views - 2 years ago
This beautiful movie created by Ashley Hall in 2006 tells the story of the new Pulaski County Animal Shelter & Humane Education Center, located in Dublin, VA.

For more than five years the Pulaski County Humane Society worked with the county to plan, design, and locate a new, modern shelter to replace the old, dilapidated shelter. Finally, after many donations and a lot of work, the new Pulaski County Animal Shelter and Humane Education Center opened its doors on April 9th, 2005.

The new shelter is an innovative and attractive facility that centralizes PCHS' efforts to help animals and educate pet owners. Our headquarters is located in the shelter, allowing us to manage an education room and its programs. The facility now also houses one of the only sterilization clinics located in a county shelter in Southwest Virginia. The PCHS Spay Clinic is available to low income resident of Pulaski County, Rescue Groups, and people interested in starting TNR (Trap Neuter Release) programs for feral cats.

Martha Drinks with Her Paw pchsva - 428 views - 2 years ago
Martha came to the Pulaski County Animal Shelter & Humane Education Center in 2005, and soon became a resident of the Pulaski County Humane Society's Cat Condo. She was too refined to stick her head in the water bowl. Instead, she liked to dip her dainty little paw in the water and lick the water off so she didn't have to bend over like a common cat!

In 2006, Martha took a job as the official library cat at the Charles & Ona B. Free Memorial Library in Dublin, VA. She is still working there and happily assists patrons with reading their favorite books. She's now known as "Belle" to all her fans!

Tom Begs for Attention pchsva - 394 views - 2 years ago
Tom and his brother Sylvester were brought to the Pulaski County Animal Shelter and Humane Education Center. These two boys won everyone over with their devotion to each other and their good looks, but then we found out Tom had a secret talent: he'd beg for attention!

Tom and Sylvester found a loving home together in 2006.

8 Day Old Kitten pchsva - 5,420 views - 2 years ago
What does a healthy, 8-day-old kitten look like? Look for closed eyes, fuzz, and a fat little belly!

Augustus, the kitten featured here, was brought to the Pulaski County Humane Society when he was just a tiny baby. His foster mom bottle-fed him until he could eat solid food, and she liked the little guy so much she decided to keep him!

Kitten Formula pchsva - 1,581 views - 2 years ago
Kitten formula is a must when feeding newborn orphans - don't use cow milk!

You'll need to cut an "X" into the tip of the nipple. To check your cut, just turn the bottle upside-down:
- If formula runs out, the hole is too big and the kitten will get too much formula and could choke.
- If nothing comes out, the hole is too small and the kitten will have to work too hard to eat.
- If a small amount drips out, you've found the right size.

You can buy pre-mixed formula in cans, but it's more cost-efficient to buy powdered formula if you're going to be feeding a lot of kittens or feeding a few kittens for a long time. Just follow the mixing instructions on the container.
