Directed by František Vláčil Voted the best Czech film ever made in a recent national critics' poll, Marketa Lazarová is a powerful and passionate medieval epic of rivalry and revenge set in the mid-13th century. Adapted from an experimental novel by Vladislav Vančura, it concerns the feud between two pagan clans that have fallen under the dominion of Christian German overlords. One clan has converted to Christianity, and its patriarch has pledged his virginal daughter Marketa to a convent; the other, brutish and superstitious, abducts the young woman during a skirmish with its rivals. Episodic in structure, the film proceeds like a folk saga, but its flashbacks, flash-forwards, and abrupt cuts give it a hallucinatory quality. Director Vláčil shot the film on location, insisting on historical authenticity, and his raw realism turns the countryside into a bleak hunting ground where new and ancient feuds settle into a tentative peace. |

Amazing and very symbolic film-poem about girls puberty. Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (Czech: Valerie a týden divů) is a 1970 Czech film directed by Jaromil Jireš and based on 1935 the novel of the same name by Vítězslav Nezval. The 1970 film adaptation of Valerie a týden divů, was filmed in 1969 starring the then 13-year-old Jaroslava Schallerová as Valerie, with a supporting cast of Helena Anýzová, Karel Engel, Jan Klusák, Petr Kopriva, among others. It was filmed in the Czech town of Slavonice and surrounding areas. The film portrays the heroine as living in a disorienting dream, seduced by priests, vampires, men and women alike. Many writers have cited similarities between the film and the work of English writer Angela Carter, who had seen the film during its release in England. Angela's screenplay for The Company of Wolves (adapted, in collaboration with the film's director Neil Jordan, from Carter's short stories) bears a direct or indirect influence. A May 2005 Jireš retrospective film series at Riverside Studios would, in fact, pair the two films together. In 2006 members of Espers, Fern Knight, Fursaxa and other musicians formed the Valerie Project. The group performs original compositions in unison with the film. (Wikipedia®) |

Baron Prasil is a charming and delectable piece of whimsy, albeit one with a fairly limited audience. While young viewers can certainly find much to enjoy, the film is not really geared toward the kiddy set; at the same time, many adults who enjoy fantastic adventures will find it a bit too gentle and sedate. But it is these very qualities that set it apart from so many other entries in the science fiction/fantasy genre, and its understated sensibility will be a big draw to those looking for something a little different in their adventure films. While Karel Zeman's screenplay is filled with delightful touches and succeeds in creating a tone that is both romantic and silly, it is Zeman's work as director and especially designer that is really impressive here. Working most often with scenes shot in either a china blue or sepia golden tone, Zeman creates a marvelous, beautiful, otherworldly atmosphere the very artificiality of which is a plus. Setting stop-motion animation, matte-process shots, and silhouettes (and, of course, live action) in some glorious Gustave Dore-inspired settings gives Prasil a unique look and a tremendously playful feel. Prasil's cast -- especially Milos Kopecky in the title role -- all fall into the spirit of the piece and add greatly to the fun (so much so that most will be willing to overlook the very poor English dubbing). Special mention should also be made of Zdenek Liska's flavorful score, which eschews the pomposity that often accompanies such projects in favor of a more playful tone. Prasil is not without its flaws -- such as its inevitable episodic nature -- but on the whole, it's an enchanting little curio. ~ Craig Butler, All Movie Guide
