About Me:

I have been involved in online Buddhism education since 1999 while working in Nepal. This sample on Youtube is the smidgen of what we have accomplished at the OpenSource Buddhist Research Institute - Madison. Please visit opensourcebuddhism.org and see much much more!

I received my BA in Buddhist Studies at Northwestern with Isshi Yamada, advisor, Sanskrit and Indian/Chinese et.al. Mahayana; BA/MA at University of Cambridge in Theology with Christopher Rowland (Biblical Studies and Liberation Theology - now at Oxford), the Master of Divinity (MDiv) from the University of Chicago studying with Father Dr. David Tracy by way of hermeneutical approaches to Buddhist Studies.

I was ordained into the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and still consider myself a minister in that tradition. I was ordained with a fore-acknowledged commitment to Buddhist thinking. What a liberal church!

After a year's ministry in Ontario, I returned to Buddhism, receiving the PhD in Buddhist STudies at Wisconsin in 1997, the very last of a line of the ancien regime. I was grilled by Kiyota, Sopa and Buhnemann. There would never again be the classic combination.

I have teach part-time where I can and run courses from our institute. I taught the comparative study of religions at the Royal Tribhuvan University at Kathmandu, I taught Sanskrit at the University of Iowa, and filled in for three different years as Visiting PRof in Buddhist STudies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
I received the PhD in Buddhist STudies at the once famed University of Wisconsin-Madison's Buddhist STudies Program. I came to study with Geshe Sopa to hear the Tibetan side of the issues and contrast them with what I learned from Yamada. It has proven to be the wildest ride I have seen!

You are not aware that as a monk, you owe your life to the triple gem! You are totally not aware of the seriousness of such a appointment. You are totally not aware of your great duties and reaponsibilities. You are not aware that it is such a highly regarded appointment that it is your duty to make good the flaws and not leave and condemn it instead.
Lets illustrate with an appointment of a doctor. A doctor accepts an assignment to perform a complicated surgery. He has no clear idea on how to perform this surgery yet he took this highly regarded appointment. he instead expects what the medical profession and the hospital could do for him instead. He abandons the surgery half way and then complains that the medical profession and the hospital are full of flaws without realizing he himself is indeed a very important component of the mediacl profession and hospital.
I hope you can understand, SchoolofBlues!

The point is you had never regarded your appointment as a monk as a professional appointment. If you are a professional, you know what I mean. You expects what Buddhism and the monastery should do for you rather than assuming your great responsibilities of such a highly regarded appointment ie a MONK or Shangha. You took the remunerations of a monk in terms of offerings. What make you think that you deserve offerings from people's hard earned money? What makes you think you deserved to be revered and respected as a monk? You had no clear idea. Yet you took the appointment, the benefits and remuneration of this "professional appointment".

I'm commenting as a Thai born American who is a former Buddhist and now a newly baptized Roman Catholic. I wanted to say that I admire you for wanting to bring peace using the teachings and philosophy of the Buddha (as stated on your webpage). However, Buddhism has never brought peace to the people of Thailand. There are some towns in that country that are full of temples but are completely lawless. I myself was ordained a monk in Thailand (as is the custom for youn men) and found the message of the Buddha to be full of flaws. In my opinion, the main function of a religion is to serve and uplift mankind. And while Buddhism can be uplifting to one's soul, the knowledge, devotion to, and love of a the true God has uplifted nations. Just my humble.

I want to tell you thank you. I have been enjoying your videos. I stumbled upon your channel while searching for Thomas Merton. All religions and philosophies based on love can learn from one another. Thank you. Take care. God bless
