About the washing machine character, Sentako Hacchan:
In Japanese, "sentaku" is laundry. "tako" is an octopus. So combining them into "sentako" would be something like "laundry octopus". And Hacchan is a reference to the fact that he has 8 legs. "Hachi" means 8. And "chan" is something you add to the end of someone's name. Similar to adding a y to Bill to get Billy.
