Abbas Kiarostami (Persian: عباس کیارستمی `Abbās Kiyārostamī; born 22 June 1940) is an internationally acclaimed Iranian film director, screenwriter, and film producer. An active filmmaker since 1970, Kiarostami has been involved in over forty films, including shorts and documentaries. Kiarostami attained critical acclaim for directing the Koker trilogy, A Taste of Cherry, and The Wind Will Carry Us.

Kiarostami has worked extensively as a screenwriter, film editor, art director and producer and has designed credit titles and publicity material. He is also a poet, photographer, painter, illustrator, and graphic designer.

Kiarostami is part of a generation of filmmakers in the Iranian New Wave, a Persian cinema movement that started in the late 1960s and includes pioneering directors such as Forough Farrokhzad, Sohrab Shahid Saless, Bahram Beizai, and Parviz Kimiavi. The filmmakers share many common techniques including the use of poetic dialogue and allegorical storytelling dealing with political and philosophical issues.

Kiarostami has a reputation for using child protagonists, for documentary style narrative films, for stories that take place in rural villages, and for conversations that unfold inside cars, using stationary mounted cameras. He is also known for his use of contemporary Iranian poetry in the dialogue, titles, and themes of his films.

What do you do for Nestle that you get to travel so much? I would love that job ... I used to work in the travel industry 10 years ago & could fly regularly for cheap, so I really miss being able to hop on a flight & go. Seriously, you were in Mpls for that long ... I was there in mid Jan. Are you going to be in Mpls weekend of 2/14/09?

Where to start about filmmakers ... oh, don't get me started, but here I go: WKW of course, Tsui Hark, Jonny To, Ching Siu Tung, some Zhang Yimou, some Benny Chan. As for current US fimmakers: Cameron Crowe, Jonathan Demme, Clint Eastwood, Coen Brothers, Wachoski brothers, Mark Romanek, some Speilberg ... I'm blanking out, must be due to current lack of talent in American cinema! LOL

But I love old time Hollywood movies though. Some of my favorite movies/directors are from the Golden age of Hollywood: Frank Capra, Howard Hawks, Elia Kazan, Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Stanley Donen, any directors of screwball comedies. What about you, favorite directors? Fave movies?

I noticed that you like blues guitar too. Cool. I love the blues. I know a tinsy bit of guitar. My main instrument is the piano though.

You're going to Mpls? Great! What dates are you there for? I like to take a trip once a month ... maybe I'll fly back & see you there? hahaha (I consider Mpls my hometown. I moved from there to TX last year & plan to move back.)

What do you do in LA? I like flying to LA too ... haven't been there in a while though.
