As one of the few artists who never/rarely lip-syncs, Stevie performs a fiery version of "Stand Back" on the legendary "Solid Gold" as the "Classic" of the week. Notice a pre-surgery Sharon Celani and Marilyn Martin (of "Separate Lives" - Phil Collins fame) as two of the background singers. Marilyn toured with Stevie during her "Wild Heart" tour in 1983, also appearing on "Saturday Night Live" with Stevie Christmas week of that year.

This song is one of my all time favorites...I remember the first time I heard it too, it left such a big impression. I was in the car early morning being driven to grammar school by my mother, and not at all happy about it. It was raining...and I heard this song...I knew it was Fleetwood Mac, how could you mistake that voice - but this one was entirely different for them...it was moody, it was surreal in a way, and it was haunting. The background vocals always sucked me in - so lush and soulful. Years later, as I became a musician and was able to dissect a song to see what makes it tick, this did not lose any of its magic for me...it is a gorgeous arrangement - at once accessible and yet esoteric. The drums and bass seemed to contradict the arty layers that swirled around them, and the I realized they needed to be like that to ground the song. Nice juxtaposition of sonic landscapes there. The only thing I thought was a bit too much was the piano, so I axed it from my version - and after several recordings where the keyboards took over the guitar, I decided to keep them to a minimum and let my influences come out - namely Lindsey Buckingham, who was an inspiration as both a keyboard player and a producer - the man is incredible. Not sure what the song is about - but I think it's about inspiration. Here's my take on it.

With "Garbo", Eric and I had an easier time than "Rose Garden/Sleeping Angel" - with only 2 camera ISOs to work with, we didn't have to create too much of a patchwork - one ISO was fluid enough that we used most of it.

Still, its a beautiful version of one of her most fan-treasured B-Sides!
