Death Defying Acts on Horseback
About Me:
Here it is - video from Moonreach Ranch, a deluxe natural horsemanship training facility near Phoenix, Arizona, named one of five finalists in the 2008 Pfizer Animal Health/Stable Management magazine "Giving Back" contest!
Death Defying Acts on Horseback!
Well, okay, maybe if you consider they're performed by Moonreach Ranch co-owner Sam Madden, America's only totally blind rodeo queen and horse show champion against sighted competitors, a kidney and pancreas transplant recipient and former diabetic with osteoporosis, anemia, a clotting disorder, malabsorption narrowly escaping requiring a home feeding tube, and admonishment not to ride from her doctors. Uh... that would be me.
Ripley's quit pursuing me when they learned I don't stand on a horse and do back flips at a gallop, which I guess proves I'm not some freak show... or ready for Cavalia. I just ride my horses and happen to be blind, which - woohoo - makes it at least death defying! Heck, how do I even eat without stabbing myself with a fork? LOL.
Not quite ready for prime time, but watch it here on YouTube - a blind rodeo queen's rendition of:
* Extended trot down the long side of the arena. (Holy cow - how do I find the long side?)
* Passage {an elevated trot} in a 20 meter circle. (A woman whose depth of field extends to the inside of her eyelids judging distance - in metric, even?)
* 10 meter figure eight at canter with simple lead changes. (Straight lines, circles, and now figure eights - when will the madness end?!)
* Side-pass. (Ohmygosh, sideways, too?!)
* Rein-back to canter transition. (Backward... in a straight line - with no reference as to what "straight" is?!)
* Leg yield. (Akin to maneuvering a diagonal line with a 1,400-pound Etch-a-Sketch - blindfolded!)
* Collected trot to canter transition on a ginormous 18-hand Paint. (Without getting a nosebleed - an against-all-odds feat for someone on blood thinners!)
* Flying lead changes in sequence. (News flash: White girl simultaneously demonstrates rhythm and math skills on horseback!)
* Canter to halt bareback with no reins. (How is that even possible?)
* Jumping. (Okay, it's only two feet, but YOU try riding a four-year-old over fences with your eyes closed!)
* Competing in a crowded rail class at a horse show. (Playing in traffic - yikes!)
* Being crowned the winner in a western-themed beauty pageant. (Without falling off the runway!)
And talk about death defying: watch my husband Ralph jump rope from horseback, canter between barrels, trot over a bridge, open a gate, rein-back, push a barrel, jump a cross-rail, trot a figure eight, canter the aforementioned super-sized Paint, ride at a horse show, and perform flying lead changes - all bridleless!
And more fun stuff! But I'll leave a few surprises...
Please peruse it, post it, pass it on, and help take this video global to spread the Moonreach Ranch message: We don't want everyone to come away thinking, "Wow, look what they did," but "Wow, think what I could do!" Dare to dream in color, but turn your dreams into goals and make them come true! If you do your best and believe in yourself, you can lasso the moon!
From our website www.MoonreachRanch.com where you can find exciting news about us making the finals in the "Giving Back" contest, tons of photos, more cool video, 60+ pages of amazing stuff, and an abundance of inspiration!
Warm regards,
Sam Madden
Ms. Country Western Arizona 1997-98... Okay, FORMER rodeo queen - a girl can cling to her 15 minutes of fame, can't she?
Closing credits:
Summer is our amenable and obedient yellow lab starlet, a ham even off camera! Our equine video stars include three Arabians (one a $600 rescue horse, one the prettiest pony ever, and one deemed "unsuitable for a special needs rider"), three Paints (one a "death warrant," one a member of the mounted posse, and one so tall we can change the arena lights from his back), an imported Hanoverian with English as a second language, and an adopted wild Mustang... the least likely one of which facilitated me being air-evaced, unconscious, to the trauma unit two years ago by falling on me - and you thought I was kidding about the death defying stuff!
