The Woodridge Special Events Committee Independence Day/4th of July Celebration For The Village of Woodridge, Illinois 2009
Air Date - Cable - August 2009 YouTube - 7/09/09
Well, its August, but I got to take you back to earlier in summer to the beginning of July 2009. The 4th July or Independence Day is an all American holiday We can really celebrate right. There are so many ways to celebrate our independence. On Saturday July 4, 2009 at Castaldo Park in Woodridge, Illinois The Woodridge Special Events Committee put on The 4th of July Celebration for The Village of Woodridge.
Although very wet and rainy, the crowds still turned up in groves to celebrate Americas Independence. Like true Americans, guests braved the rain and brought their tents and umbrellas.
This event included a yummy menu, including hot dogs, brats, chips, soda, and ice cream. Of course the beer tent, which isnt really a tent, served foamy ice-cold brew skies. Beer volunteers included a good friend of mine and mayor of The Village of Woodridge Bill Murphy. Getting served a beer by the mayor himself is quite a thing, dont see that everyday. Also there was plenty of fun activities for the kiddies, including pony rides and a trackless train. Also Jewel/Osco had cool items for sale and a dunk tank, with all the proceeds going to the Woodridge Pantry.
Athough The Music Company a staple for the picnic for nearly 2 decades were unable to play in the rain because of fear of electrocution, there still was some nice music played from cds.
The event started off with The Woodridge Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1578 having a special plaque re-dedication for Castaldo Park. Mr. Sam Castaldo proudly served his country in The United States Navy. and lost his life in the Vietnam War. This park was named in Sams memory. Now, finally, The Woodridge VFW has put up a special plaque up on the gazebo, which will remain there for the duration of the parks lifespan.
After that The Woodridge VFW had a special 12 gun saluate and flag raising taking place, just before the picnic officially started.
Also this year 2009 The Village of Woodridge is celebrating its 50th anniversary and The Woodridge Park District is celebrating its 40th anniversary. At this pcinic as another part of Celebrate Woodridge, The picnic had a special section reserved for founding and original or close to original residents. This section provided long time residents a chance to visit and socialize with each other.
The Woodridge Special Events Committee is a non-profit organization comprised of all volunteers that puts on several important events in The Village of Woodridge. Events include this 4th of July Picnic, as well as Santa comes to Woodridge at Scholastic Church.

Chicago Suburban Radio Association (CSRA) Field Day 2009 Part 1
Original Air Date on Comcast Channel 19 - August 2009 ****PLEASE NOTE***** - this segment may air much sooner here on YouTube As soon as Monday June 29, 2009
Well, once again its time for Field Day. Members of the Chicago Suburban Radio Association (CSRA) put their emergency communication skills to the test when they participated in Field Day on Saturday June 27 and Sunday June 28, 2009 in Veterans Park in North Riverside, Illinois. The annual preparedness exercise brings together Amateur Radio operators from throughout North and South America who are committed to assisting their communities in the event of a natural or man-made disaster. The goal is to make as many contacts with other hams operators during the two day event. The public was invited to stop by and tour the site. CSRA members set up and operated using emergency power and temporary antennas. They also had a solar powered station that can operate indefinitely without any commercial power or fuel for generators.
Field Day is sponsored by the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) the national association for Amateur Radio.
The Chicago Suburban Radio Association has been serving Chicago Hams and radio enthusiasts since the dawn of radio itself! CSRA members have spanned all walks of life from construction workers to lawyers: bankers to broadcasters, teachers to truck drivers. CSRA is the oldest radio club chartered in the State of Illinois and was founded in 1924.
Today there are nearly 700,000 Amateur Radio operators in the United States and more than 2.5 million worldwide.

Woodridge VFW Memorial Post 1578 - Flag Retirement Ceremony
Original Air Date on Comcast Cable Channel 19 - November 2009
ATTENTION - Segment may air much sooner here on YouTube. As early as Tuesday June 16, 2009
Well, our Veterans Day Special rolls on. Now I want to tell You about a very patriotic and important event taking place in Woodridge. On Monday June 15, 2009 at The Woodridge Park Districts Hawthorn House in Hawthorne Woods in Woodridge, Illinois, The Woodridge Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post 1578 was having its annual Flag Retirement Ceremony. After a citizen proudly flies their American Flag, after a while it may become torn, tattered, and faded. When that happens, an American flag must properly be retired. An American Flag should never ever be thrown out with the trash. American Flags need to be retired with dignity and honor. The only way to accomplish this task is to have the flag burned in a fire.
In Woodridge, Illinois, for the past year The Woodridge VFW has been collecting torn, tattered, faded flags that have been dropped off by conscious minded citizens. The flags were brought to a specially decorated retired post office box inside the Woodridge Police Department Lobby. So citizens are able to drop off their old American Flags 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year.
So on this day all the flags that were stored up since last Flag Day were properly retired. First there was a special ceremony with one flag, and then flags were first cut, with the blue being removed from the red and white stripes. By cutting the flags they become just pieces of material and can be tossed into the fire. Several Woodridge VFW members could be found, as well as family and friends of Woodridge VFW members taking part in this very special event.
For more information on The Woodridge VFW, and all the good work they do in the community and for our beloved Country, The United States of America, the greatest country in the world, I must add, please visit there very special website at http://www.woodri... Information on proper Flag etiquette can also be found there. God Bless America. God Bless these Veterans. God Bless The Flag. Happy Veterans Day.
