This was a real fun story to shoot. It was the follow-up to a story Steve Karlin had done the previous week. An Ankeny man found a unique way to raise awareness and funding for Colorectal Cancer. Instead of running or biking, he choose to hit 5,000 softballs for 24 hours straight at Des Moines' Principal Park.

Summertime in Iowa means local hotspots like Saylorville Lake are buzzing with activity. Katie Ward and myself went out to Metro Des Moines' favorite Watering Hole to see how things were going.
Speaking of hotspots, that same evening, a fire gutted a former bar on Des Moines' East Side.

For almost thirty years, volunteers have gone out to the Winterset Cemetery on Memorial Day Weekend to plant flags for fallen soldiers. What started out as a small group effort with only a handful of flags, has ballooned into a much larger effort, with over 500 flags.

This is the close to the last-ever edition of the WB11 News at Ten - CW11 News debuted the next day - so WPIX decided to treat us to a long close. And I mean long - this piece runs nearly two minutes and contains nearly the entire news theme.

So much has been said about this fantastic piece of music - easily one of the best news themes used in the city of New York - that I'll refrain from gushing over it. It's composed by Non-Stop Music and was introduced around 1998.
