Heres a response to davinip... Wmata doesnt have the kind of money to buy more Alstroms. The Rhor cars are perfectly safe to me, but jsut need more atention to their ages and the operators need to pay attention to the signals in the tunnels and need to pay attention to possible oncomming tains and such. And the Rhors (1000 series) dont need to be retired. They do their job like the newer cars do.

Yesterday's accident shows why the antique 1000 series cars need to be retired for service. They are too old and unsafe. Don't use the excuse that you don't have enough railcars. You have 1,116 cars and if we subtract 292 1000 series, that will leave you with 824 cars, just enough for service. Perphaps, you should have bought more 6000 series cars.
