METGROW is an online art project, designed and managed by artist Jenna Hoyle.
The project entitled MetGrow first began on 20th March 2009, when Jenna organised a live art event in Knightsbridge, London, in which people on an office roof terrace were encouraged to plant live seed-infused Metro newspapers which the artist had produced.
The newspapers served as a metaphor for 24 hour stressful urban living which Jenna juxtaposed by digitally printing it with vegetable inks onto paper which had been impregnated with live wildflower seeds, including poppies, daisies and wild grasses.
Jenna wanted to encourage the people working in the office to get back in touch with nature and the greenhouse installation serves to remind people that if one can grow a wildflower garden from a free newspaper on a roof top in central London, then anyone can enjoy nature's slow but sure process anywhere in a city, even if you do not have access to a garden.
This socially engaged event which has now become a live, growing wild flower garden inside a small greenhouse on the roof terrace, has been carefully documented through the last few months and has formed the basis for the website www.metgrow.co.uk.
This YouTube profile provides a forum for interviews which Jenna has organised with members of the public and some participants of the Metgrow event, in which the topic centers around the social implications of the garden, its role and importance in our 21st Century lives, urban vs rural space, secret garden retreats and even memories of childhood.
Metgrow serves to unite people through nature, to encourage people to embrace and enjoy it in our busy day to day lives and to see the event as a metaphor for life; that nature always manages to find a way to manifest itself again, even through unusual and difficult circumstances. It is hopeful and uniting and I encourage anyone who would like to get involved too by including footage of their own allottment or city garden anywhere in the world, then kindly visit my website:
