COURIC: You've cited Alaska's proximity to Russia as part of your foreign policy experience. What did you mean by that?
PALIN: That Alaska has a very narrow maritime border between a foreign country, Russia, and, on our other side, the land-boundary that we have with Canada. It's funny that a comment like that was kinda made to I don't know, you know reporters.
COURIC: Mocked?
PALIN: Yeah, mocked, I guess that's the word, yeah.
COURIC: Well, explain to me why that enhances your foreign-policy credentials.
PALIN: Well, it certainly does, because our, our next-door neighbors are foreign countries, there in the state that I am the executive of. And there
COURIC: Have you ever been involved in any negotiations, for example, with the Russians?
PALIN: We have trade missions back and forth, we do. It's very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia. As Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border. It is from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there, they are right next to our state.

CHARLES GIBSON: . . . can you look the country in the eye and say, I have the experience and I have the ability to be, not just vice president, but perhaps, President of the United States of America.?
SARAH PALIN: . . . on January 20th, when John McCain and I are sworn in . . . well be ready . . .
GIBSON: When McCain asked you to take the number two spot on the ticket, for a moment, did you think no?
PALIN: . . . the first thing I said to him was, If you really think I can help the ticket . . . absolutely I want to do this with you.

GIBSON: Doesnt that take some hubris?
PALIN: . . . you cant blink, you have to be wired in a way of being so committed to the reform of this country . . .
GIBSON: . . . about your national security credentials, [McCain] cited the fact that you have command of the Alaska national guard and that Alaska is close to Russia. Are those sufficient credentials?
PALIN: But it is about reform of government . . . and that has much to do with foreign policy and national security issues.. . . Ive been working on for these years as the governor of this state that produces nearly 20% of the US domestic supply of energy . . .
GIBSON: National security is a whole lot more than energy.
PALIN: . . . I want you to not lose sight of the fact that energy is a foundation of national security . . .
GIBSON: Did you every travel outside of the country prior to your trip to Kuwait and Germany last year?
PALIN: Canada. Mexico and then, yeah, that trip, it was a trip of a lifetime to visit our troops in Kuwait and stop and visit our injured soldiers in Germany . . .
GIBSON: Have you ever met a foreign head of state?
PALIN: I have not. And, I think if you go back in history and I think if you ask that question of many vice presidents, they have the same answer that I just gave you . . .
GIBSON: Let me ask you about some specific national security situations . . . do you believe the United States should try to restore Georgian sovereignty over South Ossetia and Abkhazia?
PALIN: . . . for Russia to have exerted such pressure in terms of invading a smaller democratic country, unprovoked, is unacceptable.

GIBSON: What insight into Russian actions, particularly over the last couple of weeks, does the proximity of this state give you?
PALIN: Theyre our next door neighbors. And you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska.
GIBSON: You favor putting Georgia and Ukraine into NATO?
PALIN: Ukraine definitely, yes, yes. And Georgia. Putin thinks otherwise. Obviously he thinks otherwise.
GIBSON: And, under the NATO treaty, wouldnt we then have to go to war if Russia went into Georgia?
PALIN: Perhaps so . . .
GIBSON: . . . do you consider a nuclear Iran to be an existential threat to Israel?
PALIN: I believe that under the leadership of Ahmadenijad, nuclear weapons in the hands of his government are extremely dangerous to everyone on this globe, yes.

GIBSON: What if Israel felt that it felt threatened and needed to take out the Iranian nuclear facilities?
PALIN: . . . I dont think that we should second guess the measures that Israel has to take to defend themselves and for their security.

GIBSON: So, if it felt necessary, if it felt the need to defend itself by taking out Iranian nuclear facilities, that would be all right?
PALIN: We cannot second guess the steps that Israel has to take to defend itself.
GIBSON: We talk on the anniversary of 9/11, why do you think those hijackers attacked? Why did they want to hurt us?
PALIN: You know, there is a very small percent of Islamic believers who are extreme and they are violent and they do not believe in American ideals . . . they need to be provided the hope that all Americans have instilled in us because were a Democratic, and we are a free and we are a free thinking society.

GIBSON: The Bush doctrine, as I understand it, is . . . that we have the right of a preemptive strike against any other country that we think is going to attack us. Do you agree with that?
PALIN: Charlie, if there is legitimate and enough intelligence that tells us that a strike is imminent against American people, we have every right to defend our country.
GIBSON: Do we have the right to be making cross border attacks into Pakistan, from Afghanistan, with or without the approval of the Pakistani government.

PALIN: I believe that America has to exercise all options in order to stop the terrorists . . .

PALIN: I do, Charlie, and on January 20th, when John McCain and I are sworn in, if we are so privileged to be elected to serve this country, well be ready. Im ready.
PALIN: You have to be wired in a way of being so committed to the mission, the mission that were on, reform of this country, and victory in the war. You cant blink. So, I didnt blink then even, when asked to run as his running mate.
PALIN: Remember again what John McCain was looking for in a running mate. Someone who has a track record of reform, someone who doesnt just talk the talk, but has proven that she can walk the walk with reform. And knowing that that is the way Im wired, that is my commitment also, I think he made the right decision there in picking his partner.
PALIN: But it is about reform of government. And its about putting government back on the side of the people. And that has much to do with foreign policy and national security issues.
PALIN: Canada. Mexico. And then, yeah, that trip that was a trip of a lifetime, to visit troops in Kuwait and stop and visit injured soldiers in Germany. That was a trip of a lifetime. And it changed my life.
PALIN: There in the state of Alaska are international trade activities bring in many leaders of countries.
PALIN: I have not. And I think if you go back in history and if you ask that question of many vice presidents, they may have the same answer that I just gave you.
PALIN: First off, were going to continue good relations with Saakashvili there. I was able to speak the other day and giving my commitment, as John McCains running mate, that we will be committed to Georgia.
PALIN: Well, Im giving you that perspective of how small our world is and how important it is that we will work with our allies to keep good relations with all of these countries. Especially Russia. We will not repeat a Cold War, we must have good relations with our allies pressuring, also helping us to remind Russia that it is in their benefit also, a mutually beneficial relationship for us all to be getting along.
GIBSON: You favor putting Georgia and Ukraine into NATO?
PALIN: Ukraine definitely yes. Yes. And Georgia.
PALIN: Well, you know, the Rose Revolution, the Orange Revolution, those actions have showed us that those democratic nations, I believe, deserve to be in NATO. Putin thinks otherwise, obviously he thinks otherwise.
PALIN: Perhaps so. That is the agreement. When you are a NATO ally, is, if another country is attacked, you are going to be expected to be called upon and help.
PALIN: Of course Ive been focused on the war. Of course Ive been, as every American has been. Since 9/11
PALIN: And what were doing in Iraq today, I believe is the right thing. As we are standing shoulder to shoulder with the Iraqi people fighting against al-Qaeda, fighting against Shia extremists, and other terrorists who would seek to destroy Iraqs democracy, who would seek to destroy America, and our allies.

SARAH PALIN: [] When he said, first he suggested, never presume to know what Gods will is, and I would never presume to know Gods will or to speak gods words, but what Abraham Lincoln had said, and thats a repeat in my comments, was, let us not pray that God is on our side, in a war, or any other time. But let us pray that we are on Gods side. Thats what that comment was all about, Charlie. And I do believe though that this war against extreme Islamic terrorists is the right thing. Its an unfortunate thing because war is Hell, and I hate war. And Charlie, today is the day that I send my first-born, my son, my teenage son, oversees with his Stryker brigade. Four thousand other wonderful American men and women to fight for our country, to fight for our freedoms.
PALIN: I believe that there is a plan for this world, and that plan, for this world, is for good. I believe that there is great hope and great potential for every country, to be able to live and be protected within inalienable rights, that I believe are God-given, Charlie. And I believe those are the rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That in my worldview is the grand plan.
PALIN: I dont know if the task is from God, Charlie. What I know is that my son has made a decision. I am so proud of his independent and strong decision. What he decided to do, in serving for the right reasons in serving something greater than self.
PALIN: I believe that under the leadership of Ahmadinejad, nuclear weapons in the hands of his government are extremely dangerous to everyone on this globe, yes. We can not just concede that, oh gee, maybe theyre going to have nuclear weapons, what can we do about it? No way. Not Americans. We do not have to stand for that.
PALIN: Well, first, we are friends of Israel, and I dont think that we should second guess the measures that Israel has to take to defend themselves, and for their security.
GIBSON: Do you agree with the Bush doctrine?
PALIN: In what respect, Charlie?
GIBSON: The Bush — well, what do you interpret it to be?
PALIN: His worldview?
GIBSON: No, the Bush doctrine, annunciated September 2002, before the Iraq War.
PALIN: I believe that what President Bush has attempted to do is rid this world of Islamic extremism, terrorists who are hell-bent on destroying our nation. There have been blunders along the way, though. There have been mistakes made, and with new leadership, and thats the beauty of American elections, of course, and democracy, is with new leadership comes opportunity to do things better.
GIBSON: The Bush doctrine as I understand it is that we have the right of anticipatory self-defense, that we have the right to a preemptive strike against any other country that we think is going to attack us. Do you agree with that?
PALIN: I agree that a presidents job, when they swear in their oath to uphold our Constitution, their top priority is to defend the United States of America.
PALIN: Charlie, if there is legitimate and enough intelligent and legitimate evidence that tells us that a strike is imminent against American people, we have every right to defend our country. In fact, the President has the obligation, the duty, to defend. And thats what a McCain-Palin administration would do.
PALIN: Were going to work with these countries, building new relationships, working with existing allies, but forging new also, in order to, Charlie, get to a point in this world, where war is not going to be a first option. In fact, war has got to be and military strike a last option.
PALIN: This brings us right back to how important it is to win in Afghanistan, to make sure that the terrorist groups are not growing there. We cant afford to lose in Iraq, and we cant afford to lose in Afghanistan. And were going to have to implement in Afghanistan a lot of the same successes, a lot of that surge solution that has been implemented and proven, proven to be successful in Iraq.
PALIN: We do need more troops in Afghanistan. We do.
PALIN: In order to stop Islamic extremists, those terrorists who would seek to destroy America, and our allies, we must do whatever it takes, and we must not blink, Charlie. In making those tough decisions of where we go, and even who we target. And let me get back to whats going on there in Pakistan right now. A target needs to be Osama Bin Laden. We cannot give up our fight to find him, and John McCain is committed to find him.
PALIN: I believe that America has to exercise all options in order to stop the terrorists who are hell-bent on destroying America, and our allies. We have got to have all options out there on the table.

TOPIC: Foibles of Sarah Palin
TRANSCRIPT: CAMERON:Well, I wish I could have told you back at the time but all of it was put off the record until after the election. There was great concern in the McCain campaign that Sarah Palin lacked a degree of knowledgeability necessary to be a vice president and a heartbeat away from the presidency. We are told by folks that she didn't know what countries were in NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement, that being Canada, the U.S., and Mexico. We're told she didn't understand that Africa was a continent rather than a [...] country just in itself. A whole host of questions that caused serious problems about her knowledgeability. She got very angry at staff, thought that she was mishandled, was particularly angry about the way the Katie Couric interview went. She didn't accept preparation for that interview and the aides say that was part of the problem. And that there were times when she was hard to control emotionally. There is talk of temper tantrums at bad news clippings, to all of this she says she doesn't understand how anybody could feel that way. She says she has done everything that was asked of her, and she bears no ill will to staff. Notwithstanding that, there is to be an avalanche that will continue for many days now, we're told, of story upon story of the foibles of Sarah Palin. with that said, there is absolutely no denying, Shep, that she has stirred the passions of republican conservatives and a lot of them are looking for her in 2012.
SMITH: Many political observers are probably sitting here listening to you say this and asking themselves how could they end up with a running mate who doesn't know that Africa is a continent, and they don't know the level of problems that they are getting themselves into in advance? I mean, what happened with the vetting process?
