Walton's Toye by Herbert Howells (p1961) maxwellsteer - 28 views - 1 week ago
Michael Maxwell Steer plays Walton's Toye, recorded live at a concert in Handel House, London on 5 July 2007 featuring english harpsichord music. It's from 'Howells Clavichord' written 1941-1961, a companion volume to 'Lambert's Clavichord' (p1927). On the cover of either was a photo of the two Goff clavichords decorated by Rex Whistler. In my youth I had the good fortune to see these fabulous instruments in Tom Goff's Pont St house. Sadly, there dont seem to be pix of them on the web. I have always imagined (but not seen anywhere written) that Howells' interest in the clavichord was piqued by the pioneering performer Violet Gordon Woodhouse. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C lavichord. Howdy Max! Your doin great job here! My favorite composer is Byrd and Purcell. I got a complete My Ladye Nevells Booke. What a bummer, I didn't own a harpsi nor a clavi. But I enjoy playing some of the works with my electronic piano with harpsi sound.

Max, your performance of these pieces are gorgeous! I, too, have long been a fan of the FVB, and of the works contained therein. So lovely to here them played with insight and sensitivity. I'm hooked!
