By definition the word "MASKIL" denotes a "different kind of song... One that requires great skill in it's execution." Originating from the ancient Hebrew, Maskils were first introduced in the Biblical Psalms by King David, somewhere between the years 1011-971 B.C.

An individual referred to as a Maskil, is considered to be a self-taught scholar or "enlightened man", who represents the love of learning and the striving for culture awakening.
