Hi! I'm just a 21 year old full-time college student who does freelance media projects on the side and would love more than anything to edit cinema trailers for a living. I get asked a lot what program I use. I started with Windows Movie Maker (GOD, THE HORROR.) and then moved onto Ulead Video Studio 11. When I got a Mac last summer, I got Final Cut and now I don't think I could ever go back! If you want to edit, the best advice I can give is to just put the time into it. It doesn't happen overnight, and there is no way to straight out answer the question "how do you make a video". It really does just take time. Good luck!
