(notes below taken from the jazz festival program)
What do the Parisian musette, jazz and Fritz the Cat have in common? Les Primitifs du Futur! The cult band slings out an eclectic mix of music including gypsy, jazz, rumba, java and swing. Founded by Frenchman Dominique Cravic and American cartoonist-musician legend Robert Crumb, this joyous jamboree placed itself in the avant-garde of French chanson by reviving the old-fashioned charm of '30s Paris.

The theremin is an early electronic musical instrument controlled without contact from the player. It is named after the Russian inventor, Professor Léon Theremin who patented the device in 1928. The controlling section usually consists of two metal antennas which sense the position of the player's hands and control oscillators for frequency with one hand and amplitude (volume) with the other.I have never seen (or even heard of one) before.
Very strange... indeed!
The theremin is played by Fay Lovsky

This is the last of my videos of Vic Vogel & Le Jazz Big Band from the Canada Day show at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal.

Featuring:
Al McLean and André Leroux - saxophones
Lazaro René Saucedo - congas
Richard Irwin - drums

My brother and I each had a camera during this concert so that I was able to edit from both in putting together the final videos in this series of 8 Vic Vogel & Le JazzBig Band at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal.

Stephen Barry and Andrew Cowan, fathers of Quebec blues, have known one another for some 40 years.
Funnily enough, the idea of releasing an album together only recently occurred to them by chance, when Andrew served as an emergency replacement for the musician Stephen was meant to perform with. The resulting album is titled "DUO"

Montreal musicians Stephen Barry (bass) and Andrew Cowan (guitar) team up to perform songs from their recent CD "DUO"

It was a very relaxed, enjoyable and friendly concert. Their music can best be described as jazzy folk-blues

-----------SONGS I WAS TAUGHT TO LOVE-----------
Back in the 1940's as a young boy I was introduced to the world of self-made music by my father (1903-1983) who sang and played the banjo uke and tenor banjo. There was no pretense here, just simple straight out stuff, much of it Tin Pan Alley. It was this simplicity of delivery that attracted me as a teenager in the 1950's to British skiffle music in general and Lonnie Donegan in particular. Exploring the origins of British skiffle led me to Woody Guthrie, Leadbelly, Big Bill Broonzy, the Carter Family, and all the old-timey music from the 20's, 30's and 40's. In 1960 or '61 I saw the New Lost City Ramblers play at McGill University in Montreal. These guys took everything that I knew and loved about "simple" music to another level... During the early 1960's (inspired by the NLCR, the Weavers, Pete Seeger, Bob Gibson, Judy Collins, Tommy Makem and the Clancy Brothers, the Kingston Trio, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan) I played folk music in and around the Montreal area, but in the late 60's I put music aside. Other adventures... marriage, children, took over my life and psychedelic rock, which was great to listen to, did not inspire me musically. Then in 1998 I met Bob Fuller who's dedication to the preservation of old-time country music is legendary in Canada. His commitment inspired me to go back to my roots and reinvent my musical personna. I have been playing my brand of simple "songster" music at Bob Fuller's Hillbilly Night (Monday nights at the Wheel Club) since 1998. Now in 2007 Lew Dite (gotta love the luddites) wants to spread this musical message through the power of the internet. It may take a while but it is my plan to put my entire repertoire of songs on youtube. Enjoy!
