At West Australian Reptile Park, they keep two dingos called Rusty and Dusty. The handler knows his stuff and this video contains a brief insight into dingo psychology including a demonstration of how to maintain and establish pack order.

As it's explained, dingos are very jealous and when one dingo leaps up into the handler's arms for a cuddle (and to chew his leather hat), a loud growling match ensues. Fortunately, the handler growls the loudest and once the dingos have submitted and the growling's over, everyone goes about their day happily afterwards. Chewing leather shoes in particular is a favourite dingo pastime.

Whether it's foolhardiness or having seen the dingos get shirty with one another before and knowing it's mainly bluff and display, i didn't step back terrified when the growling kicked off.
