My producer, Jessica Bender, and myself have worked on the documentary, The Gits, for over 6 years and counting. We started the doc with the intention of doing a short film about the band and their fiery lead singer, Mia Zapata. The film took on a life of it's own when Mia's murderer was caught after nearly a decade of being on the run. What I strive to do in making this film is to hopefully shed some light on the brilliance of this band and the devastating loss that was suffered when Mia was murdered. In the process, I met some wonderful people and the film is now a feature documentary. Something that I am most proud about is being able to put together a 10 minute film piece that was shown in front of Mia's killer and the judge in the case. I believe that this short film had an influence and an impact on the judge in her decision to give an extra 10 years in her sentencing of the killer--he received 36.6 years.
