Just for the record, I've met many people of various beliefs (and non-beliefs) and generally found them all capable of happiness and misery. As a Christian example, a very close friend of mine saw her mother die who was very bitter that the rapture didn't come "as it was supposed to" before she died in misery so bitter that her family was grateful when she finally passed on. And worse exists, but so depressing that I don't even want to share it. Others, natch, were much happier. And I'd question the judgment of someone who could live to be "long in the tooth" but only see miserable atheists his entire life (especially if having done research, which he probably did given that he'd call himself "sagacious," too).
