VOCAL EXTRACTION

It's best to have both a main track and an accompanying instrumental track. If so, you can use Utagoe (http://www.vector.co.jp/downl oad/file/win95/art/ff258894.ht ml). I've had best results with the 1.1 setting in general. This sometimes does not work for various reasons.

If there's no instrumental, it's much harder. You can extract the center channel of a single track (see below), then use an equalizer to suppress non-vocal frequencies.

INSTRUMENTAL EXTRACTION

To extract an instrumental track where one does not exist, you can use the dsp_centercut plugin (http://moitah.net) for Winamp. It has several settings. Choose the Sides (Bass to Sides) setting for best results. Some tracks may be harder to work with than others.

REMIXING

I've used the following audio editing applications: GarageBand, Audacity, FL Studio, Melodyne.

	kawaiirrhea (5 months ago) On how to use Utagoe: In the main window, put the main track in the first line, the instrumental track in the second line, and your desired output track in the third line (they have to be WAV files; use your preferred audio editor/player/converter to convert from MP3/etc. to WAV if it's not already in WAV; I recommend ffmpeg if you like command-line utilities). You can change the settings by clicking on the hammer/wrench button. The left tab has a slider. I usually set it to 1.1 and select the radio button to the left of that. I think that's frequency cancellation. To do piecewise phase inversion, select the radio button below that. I'm not sure what the two options in that box are. Good luck!
