The path that you choose in terms of doing straight film or getting a stable job is really up to you and what you want to do. I can't suggest much because I'm going straight into film, but everyone's paths are different. But I don't want to discourage you to not attend UCSD, its just my opinion on the visual arts major, you might like it because some people do. But film is more than just the school itself, you can get far on your own. I don't think wong fu got as far as they did because of UCSD, they are at where they are now because of themselves. Just do what you are passionate about and don't let anyone stop you. If you want to do film, just go for it but nothing is easy so you got to stick to it. I hope this helps.

I'm not sure how difficult it is to get into the UCSD school itself, but it should be alot easier to get into UCSD as a media/film major because visual arts media isn't that impacted of a major. Just a warning, I personally don't really like the media major at UCSD.
