Amnesty International volunteer Mike Raine and campaigner Hilary Homes present their research into Omar Khadr's case.
After spending 4 months looking over Canadian government reports and establishing an accurate time line of legal developments; Mike's perspective on Omar Khadr has changed dramatically. Mike's research reveals a very different perspective on Omar Khadr from that which has been presented by most media coverage.
For viewers' convenient reference, I have included a copy of all the subtitled text and web links which appear throughout the video.
• Amnesty International is a member-based organization. Much of Amnesty's work is done by volunteers just like Mike.
• Guantánamo's detention policies and practices have broken international laws.
• The American Civil Liberties Union, Amnesty International, the Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers, Human Rights First and Human Rights Watch urged the President-elect to drop the military commission charges against Khadr and either repatriate him to Canada or, if there is evidence to support it, to prosecute him in US federal courts in accordance with international juvenile justice and fair trial standards.
• Omar Khadr may be the first person put on trial anywhere in the world for war crimes allegedly committed when he was a juvenile.
• Omar's reading list: Life of Pi, To Kill a Mockingbird, Climb, The Runaway Jury, The Swiss Family Robinson, Tin-Tin Comics, The Chronicles of Narnia, Eyes of Darkness by Dean Koontz, Fionavar Tapestry Trilogy by Guy Gavriel Kay, Harry Potter: The Deathly Hollows (the best book he had ever read), The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown, Wildfang by Jack London, Canadian Geographic, National Geographic, Various car magazines, Letters, Grade 7/8 math, science, and English textbooks, First Aid book, A dictionary, Biology books (because he wants to be a doctor), Books on origami and yoga, French-English travel phrase book, Books on photography and cameras, Books on calligraphy ...
• According to international law, a child soldier should be rescued and rehabilitated, not captured and imprisoned.
• March 12 & 14th, 2008 Canadian Government welfare reports say that Omar Khadr is a "likeable, funny and intelligent young man" he is "open and friendly" and wishes to be a "normal person" with a "normal life".
• The report concluded by saying that, "Omar is 'salvageable', "non-radicalized', and 'a good kid', who is well liked both within the Camp and by Joint Task Force staff.
