'Star Eyes' - jazz piano tutorial jazz2511 - 740 views - 4 days ago
In Mark Levine's best selling 'Jazz Piano Book' he includes a final chapter ('Practice, Practice, Practice' pp. 254 -267), in which he makes a number of suggestions that apply some of the ideas contained in his book to the standard 'Star Eyes' (Don Raye and Gene DePaul).

This version was improvised from the basic chords and melody leadsheet in 'New Real Book No.3'.
I didn't set out to specifically incorporate Mark Levine's ideas in this. However this might be useful to piano players who have studied this chapter - suggesting some additional ways to play the song. The full quality video is available to download free from my website at

'Les Grelots' (Michelle Petrucciani) - latin jazz piano tutorial jazz2511 - 1,358 views - 4 weeks ago
I recorded this midi file some time ago - I transcribed the song from a Michelle Petrucciani CD. This video is the midi file converted to notation (using PG Music's 'Power Tracks Pro Audio' software). I have added quite a few comments to the video and I have also added a leadsheet that scrolls as the song plays to play along!
He recorded it a number of times - several times solo, and at least once with the composer Eddie Louiss - usually as a samba. The backing that I recorded, especially the bass line, is more in the loose jazz-salsa mould.
The video and midi file can be downloaded from my website at http://www.bushgrafts.com
On my DVD -
http://www.bushgrafts.com/jazz /DVDbuy.htm
is also an MP3 of the backing track, a printable copy of the notation, and also a printable copy of the leadsheet.

'It's the Talk of the Town' - jazz piano tutorial jazz2511 - 1,422 views - 1 month ago
It's the Talk of the Town. I used the Band in a Box 'Real tracks' to create the bass and drums backing. There are lots of annotations on this video highlighting things other jazz piano players might find interesting,

Nardis - jazz piano lesson jazz2511 - 1,689 views - 1 month ago
Nardis - jazz piano lesson. This tune (attributed to Miles Davis - though he apparently never recorded it) has been played by quite a few jazz pianists - notably Bill Evans. There are several excellent versions on youtube - try the version by 7notemode -

This I did some time ago as a midi file - and using computer software was able to transform it into a video lesson with piano and notation views, as well as some annotations.

Embraceable You - solo jazz piano lesson jazz2511 - 1,336 views - 1 month ago
Embraceable You - jazz piano lesson. This is an enhanced version of the original video posted here on Youtube. Now that I can upload High Definition videos, it is worth upgrading some of my earlier videos that have had lots of hits, with added notation, and clear views of the keyboard.
Herbie Hancock does a great solo version of this on his (fairly) recent 'Gershwin's World' album.
This is a very simple play through ( 3 times) which should be fairly easy to play.

Strange Meadowlark (Dave Brubeck) - solo jazz piano lesson jazz2511 - 1,201 views - 1 month ago
This is one of Dave Brubeck's most beautiful compositions - from the best selling 'Time Out' album. It is quite unusual in form.

One feature of the original is the sparkling arpeggios that Brubeck plays up the piano - while I have not copied exactly the notes played by Brubeck, I have shown a few different options in creating these (relatively) easy to play, but impressive sweeping arpeggios. See 2:42, 3:38, 5:44 for some examples.

There is a free to download copy on my website at http://www.bushgrafts.com

'Blue Bossa' Version 1 - High Definition version - Jazz piano tutorial jazz2511 - 3,899 views - 2 months ago
One of my most viewed videos has been this version of 'Blue Bossa' I have had many requests for a transcription. In the process of preparing this, I took the opportunity to re-cast the video in High Definition mode and to add a clear view of the notes played on the piano keyboard, and also an animated notation window. The printable transcription is on my DVD along with the bass and drums backing track I prepared and used on the video -

I am a (retired) teacher having taught in a jazz studies course at a tertiary college in Geelong Australia.
My primary interest is to provide as much information as I can to intermediate - advanced jazz piano students.
I record the video (on a cheap webcam), audio (as an MP3 file on my computer) and as a midi file (on my Yamaha P-250 piano) all at the same time so all are in sync.
Usually straight after recording, I add the comments that try to explain some of the melodic/harmonic ideas that I used.
The videos are assembled later - often with transcriptions (generated from the midi file by computer - usually PowerTracks from PGmusic) and always with annotations that explain some of the techniques used.
Go to my website at http://www.bushgrafts.com for free downloads of these videos.
- or go to my website to buy my DVD with all the videos at high quality and extra printable transcriptions. Hitting 'Ctrl/Shift/S' in Windows Media Player slows the DVD videos down!

Doug, you are number one. I dig your work so much. The understanding of how to teach things that you have is from another planet. Not only do I dig your playing but also your approach to teaching and explaining things. I wish one day I can get closer to this! Thanks for posting,
