TAB AVAILABLE READ ON...okay it's a "girly" song, but my wife has always liked it; well she did like it until I started arranging and practising it for fingerstyle ;)

It's the glimmer of hope/ray of sunshine from Alanis Morissette's otherwise rather angry Jagged Little Pill album. I remember listening to it many times when it first came out, and while the other songs on the album gained the most air play, I always considered it the best song on the album. I have noticed however over the years that it has been more appreciated than it initially was.

As usual I haven't properly finished learning it and just watching back the video I can see bad tempo, missed notes but as always I present it here for you warts and all :)

It's tricky, don't be fooled. There is fast fingerwork required, both hands, and the beat is synchopated. I can never remember which verse comes where when I'm playing it, so my apologies to the Alanis fans where/if I muffed it up.

I've seen a video of Alanis playing an acoustic version, and I hoped to get that kinda sound. The harmonica solo was no doubt the most challenging part, I hope you appreciate it!

Anyway, enjoy!

TAB AVAILABLE READ ON...I was inspired to arrange this one after seeing Matt Pochak and Uncle Parsnip play it. It comes together quite well, but like a lot of Bowie songs there are many different chords you'll need to get in touch with ;)

Not much to say about this one, I'm sorry about the clicks and pops, I was using different video capture software and I didn't notice it was realigning the audio to match the video until I'd finished, packed up and ready to post. Don't you hate that!

Rock-a-bye Your Bear / Where's Jeff? (fingerstyle guitar) jawmunji - 3,667 views - 7 months ago
I'm a Dad, I'm an Aussie, of course I know Wiggles! After taking the 3 kids to see The Wiggles in concert today I was inspired to finally record a couple of their songs that I arranged for fingerstyle a while back.

If you don't know Rock a Bye Your Bear then I can only assume that you don't actually know any 2-5 years olds. Where's Jeff even Wiggles fans might not know but it is one of my favourites, it is actually un-Wiggly in it's composition having a chord progression that isn't just G/C/D etc.

Rock a Bye is fairly straight forward, strumming on the rhythm, picking out the melody and having a groovy baseline. When I break into Where's Jeff I go pretty ballastic, you will probably notice that I don't really hold it together all that well but when I can it is heaps of fun and very, very cool. The effort is completely wasted on the kids - they'd be happier if I strummed the basic chords and sang it ;)

Sorry but I haven't tabbed these ones out yet, I wasn't sure if anyone would care for them. Pop a comment in if you do, if I see enough nags then I'd do it ;)

Enjoy - even if you have never heard of The Wiggles ;)

TAB AVAILABLE READ ON...another Naudo job. Top man Naudo, one of the best if not the best. A universe of inspiration and talent.

I've rushed this one out a bit, should have spent another few weeks practising, but it will do. Time to move on! It's pretty straight forward - but I say that now that I am 9 Naudo songs down. If you can play my other Naudo songs then you'll be able to play this one.

I'm pretty slack with tabs these days, I don't really need them so much anymore, so don't complain!

TAB AVAILABLE READ ON...right, this is probably the most difficult song I try to play. Yep, inspired by Naudo, but 6 months+ ago when I started working it out I was missing a few key points to Naudo-style, so I made it really hard for myself by plucking more than flicking.

So, probably don't try this one at home. I think I threw away about 50 takes over the past month trying to record a decent version, and this one has about 3 punch ins anyway. Yes, I struggle to play it.

Sounds _okay_, but could be a lot better. Maybe one day I'll relearn it, Naudo-style for improved sound. Anyway, enough self-criticism, get it in ya!

Tab is only a rough skeleton, if you can play this tune you'll work it out ;)

TAB AVAILABLE READ ON...another from Naudos catalouge. This one is a bit trickier; in fact it is kind of improvised. I sing the song in my head as I go but I can never remember the words ;) I've been working on this one on and off for about 3 months, so be warned, it isn't one of his harder ones, but playing it cleanly (which I still can't) isn't easy!

Note that Naudo plays this dropped D. I found it a little easier to play it standard tuning, but it does miss out on that excellent bah-dum D bass note. You'll also notice that I don't get the double bass note down as well or as often as Naudo...I'm just not good enough yet ;)

Peter Buck came up with a great sound in this song...as with a lot of REM songs the meaning is kinda vauge, according to Wikipedia it is essentially about "being at the end of one's rope".

Tab is only a rough skeleton, if you can play this tune you'll work it out ;) http://jaw.iinet.net.au/stuff/ tab.html I created a video lesson for anyone interested: http://au.sevenload.com/videos /tujbMg1-Naudos-Losing-My-Reli gion-lesson-by-JAW

TAB AVAILABLE READ ON...every Aussie fingerpicker needs to have a Chisel number in their belt, I didn't until I put in 2 weeks of effort on this one. It is a quieter Cold Chisel piece, by Don Walker, and suits fingerstyle well. I arranged it Naudo style which, as those who have been following my work, know that I'm right into :)

Points of note:
* I didn't bother with the intro or outtro, well not for now. I just wanted the basic tune down. Maybe later, after all, the intro is a signature riff to this song.

* I didn't actually play it as well as I would have liked, but I had put pressure on myself to get it out. This was the best take out of 4 attempts, if you ever see me play it live it will sound a lot better I'm sure :)

* Mossy has been playing this in his shows recently, he gave me a bit of inspiration into doing this piece. Thanks Mossy! Thanks also Don, great song, meaning is a bit dark though. And yeah, thanks Barnsey, if you hadn't have "crooned" this one it might never have found its way into Aussie folklore ;)

* Yeah, I got a bit more fancy in the video production this time...I hung a sheet in the background ;) Hopefully it will be a bit less distracting than my messy shed, although it didn'tstop the light from reflecting off my forehead!

* I've just about zoned into my new guitar. I have realised that I need strings with more tension though. The nylon is working out great, but after many years of playing steel I'm a bit rough on them. Perhaps I might ease back after a while...perhaps high tension nylon strings will do the job.

* If you aren't a thirty-something Aussie you probably have never heard this song. Check it out here: http://au.youtube.com/watch?v= O002YljY3Vk

Anyway, tab in the usual spot:

Baby can I hold you (fingerstyle guitar) jawmunji - 17,223 views - 1 year ago
TAB AVAILABLE READ ON...while snooping through Naudos back catalouge, I decided to take on a couple of transcriptions that weren't specifically a favourite song of mine, but were something easy to play and sounds good to add to my fingerstyle repertoire. I noticed this one, Tracy Chapmans classic from the 80's, and it seemed pretty straight forward. It was - took me 4 hours to have it pretty much tabbed and learnt.

So if you were interested in trying out a simplified Naudo styled tune, this is it! I mostly left out his signature bah-dum-dum bassline in favour of the treble D/Dsus2 strum , which for me fits nicely with the song and is easier to play ;)

Now some of you who have been following my work will have noticed that I'm playing on my new guitar! Yah, it finally arrived - thanks to Tony Agnello at Soundcentre Morley, and to Brendan from Yamaha Australia - without whom I doubt if it would have been shipped from Japan/China at all.

For those who _haven't_ been following, this is a Yamaha CGX171CCA nylon stringer, more suited to flamenco style than classical - and thus suited to my particular flavour of fingerstyle. It comes equipped with a piezo pickup and an additional inbody condensor microphone which can be mixed on the guitar. I think this can give a very "real" sound to the guitar when plugged in. On the mechanical side the guitar has a truss rod which means that fiddling with neck+nut+saddles to get "the perfect action" becomes fairly straight forward for this tinkerer...

This will be my main work axe from now on, since realising that deep down I am a nylon man. I've got a few more tunes I've been saving up for when it arrives, so keep an eye on your subscriptions...for those who are subscribers that is ;)

I didn't go to my usual effort for the tab this time, just a basic skeleton of the tune. Listen, and play it your own way :)

Tab in the usual spot: http://jaw.iinet.net.au/stuff/ tab.html

The Logical Song (fingerstyle guitar) jawmunji - 24,389 views - 1 year ago
TAB AVAILABLE READ ON...first up let me apologise for the bad sound - a quick explanation: I'm waiting for my new guitar to arrive from Japan and delivery has been delayed by another month. So rather than not posting anything for yet another month, I've dug out my 1980's banger just to get something out. The guitar is in poor condition and without a pickup it is recorded with a webcam mike. I cleaned up the sound as best I could, but it still sounds poor.

Anyway, enough excuses, this is another genius arrangement by Naudo, cut down and simplified by me so that us mere mortals can play it. I love what he's done with it, not to mention it is a classic rock song to boot.

It's a bit tricky to play and as per usual I've played it too fast. You'd think I'd be used to playing for the camera by now. Play it s l o w e r than this everyone ;) Note that I get a lot of strumming going on; the thumb gets a mind of its own when the fingers start hacking and slashing - try to follow the beat according to the tab ;)

Tab is a bit raw still, I'll revisit it sometime soon, but you'll get the idea. Usual spot:

Wish You Were Here (fingerstyle guitar) jawmunji - 145,606 views - 1 year ago
TAB AVAILABLE READ ON...I've revisited an old favourite pink floyd tune here. I've arranged it fingerstyle - so it attempts to capture melody, rythym, bass, solos...well not the middle scat solo, just the intro one.

I play two notes octave separated for the main riff; since it is supposed to be played on a 12 string, this is what it "should" sound like on a 6 string. I picked the intro hard up against the bridge to simulate the radio sound from the studio recording, and then played the intro solo louder overtop of the riff as much as I could. Once the verse starts, it's all picked over the soundhole.

Since the song has a strong rythym guitar sound I throw in a fair bit of strumming to beef up the middle. I borrowed from the "pulse" live version for the sus4s & 9ths. The bassline is mostly just the root note of the chord, plucked on the last beat of a bar to the next chord root note.

Anyway get it in ya.

TAB AVAILABLE READ ON...This is another Naudo piece that I had a go at. I don't think I've captured it the same way he did, but I do enjoy playing it.

I was only a few months into learning it when I recorded this so there are a lot of mistakes and the tempo is plain awful. And don't start on my tremelo ad libs, I shouldn't have bothered! Ask me to play it again in a few years ;)

Oh, the excessive mouth breathing is because I had a nasty cold, and the occasional head twitches are because flies kept landing on my face...that's the Aussie summer for you eh!

Ola y gracias Naudo!

This is my version of an arrangement by Michael Chapdelaine. Sorry about the bad sound and the mouth breathing - I had a nasty cold at the time of recording.

By request of the author, my version of the tab is no longer available, please do not ask for it!

Amateur guitar playing hack for many years, never played for an audience until YouTube showed up! All the stuff here is instrumental, you won't catch me singing ;)

Currently enjoying fingerstyle arrangements of classic rock/pop, own versions as well as arrangements by others. Style is a cross between classical guitar and thumbpick boom chic.

Steel string acoustic guitar is a Maton EM225C with standard AP4 pickup. Nylon string is Yamaha CGX171CCA with 2 way pickup. Audio is fed direct to PC when videoing.

About Me: FAQ
-----
Q: Can you send me the tab to [x]?
A: Click on the link I provided above for my tab site.

Q: Can you tab out the song [x] for me?
A: No, sorry, I've got a lifetime of transcriptions already planned, not taking requests!

Q: Can you redo the song [x] so I can see the finger positions better/make a lesson on song [x]?
A: No, sorry, all I plan on doing is vids and tabs.

Q: How long have you been playing for?
A: I was given my first guitar when I was 7...so I've been playing on and off for 30 years. I probably should be a better player by now then eh! ;)

Q: Ha ha, your face/mouth/lips look funny!
A: Yep, that's guitar face. You can't fight it; if you try to stop guitar face then you won't be able to play properly. Guitar face is usually worse when reading from sheet - if the tune is memorised then guitar face usually isn't so bad.

Q: What is the easiest song to learn?
A: From my tabs, go with Here Comes the Sun. It doesn't require thumb independance. For Naudo-style stuff, go with Baby Can I Hold You. Be warned - Canon in D is _very_ hard to play, maybe start with the others frist.

Q: How do you get such a clear sound on your videos?
A: I plug the guitar directly into my computer, with a video feed from a webcam. I have written an article about this at http://jaw.iinet.net.au/stuff/ makevideo.html

Q: How do I tune my guitar for "Dropped D"?
A: Dropped D just means the 6th string is a D instead of an E. This is easiest done by playing open string 4th(D) and 6th(normally E) at the same time while twisting the 6th string tuning peg down. When it hits D, you'll hear the 2 notes are the same but an octave apart - ie both are D. I usually go past a bit, then back up slowly, to ensure there is no slack in the string.

Q: When is the next song coming out?
A: I churn out an arrangement every 6-8 weeks which is about how much my family can tolerate my guitar playing!
