Los hinchas británicos tienen mala fama en Europa, pero hoy fueron los ultras del modesto Austria de Viena que marcaron la noche en la Liga Europa al provocar una interrupción de casi media hora contra el Athletic de Bilbao. Todo comenzó apenas comenzada la segunda parte cuando el sector radical de los austríacos encendió varias bengalas, inundando de un espeso humo el pequeño estadio vienés, donde la selección española se entrenó el año pasado antes de la gran final de la Eurocopa. Así, se produjo la primera interrupción de cinco minutos cuando el encuentro iba 0-1 para los vascos. Un cuarto de hora más tarde y tras una controvertida decisión del árbitro, el noruego Oddvar Moen, los fanáticos del Austria perdieron los papeles por completo al tirar objetos al campo. Por megafonía los responsables del Austria, incluyendo el propio presidente del club violeta, trataron de tranquilizar a la hinchada, que había desplegado en su sector banderas españolas pre constitucionales e incluso una pancarta con el lema "Viva Franco". En vano. Cayeron más objetos sobre el campo y los insultos contra el colegiado y la plantilla visitante aumentaron de tono. Finalmente cuando un grupo de ultras austríacos logró saltar la valla que separa las gradas del terreno de juego, el árbitro escandinavo interrumpió el encuentro y medio centenar de policías antidisturbios salieron al campo. Fue entonces cuando Markus Kraetschmer, gerente general del Austria, intentó personalmente frenar la entrada de más hinchas al campo de juego. Durante casi media hora, los jugadores de ambos equipos permanecieron en los vestuarios, ante los desesperados suplicios de los responsables del club vienés a su hinchada de que mantenga la calma ante las graves consecuencias que le esperan al Austria. Ahora habrá que ver cuál será la sanción que emitirá el comité disciplinario de la UEFA contra el club vienés, que tradicionalmente representa a las clases sociales más favorecidas de Viena, una ciudad conocida como la capital mundial de la música y la cultura. Hoy los hinchas del Austria han aportado una nueva y menos favorecida faceta a la imagen de esta ciudad.
