When her supporters were asked broad questions about why they why they thought she should be president, the responses were vague: She's "real." She'll "stick up for America." It has been said comments that you would find similarly talking point-driven, substance-less supporters at an Obama rally, and we agree. But no politician has emerged on the national stage as undefined and unqualified as Sarah Palin, and her public persona--which is anti-intellectual by definition--discourages substance. Instead, we get winking. One could hardly imagine her giving a complex speech about race in America, or speaking eloquently about our country's relations with Islam. Not just because she couldn't write such a speech (Obama has speech-writers, of course) but because she wouldn't--such necessarily academic discussion is antithetical to the persona she's created for herself and that her supporters have come to love. Nieuw wereldrecord Domino Day Uitgegeven: 13 november 2009 23:21 - Laatst gewijzigd: 13 november 2009 23:21 LEEUWARDEN - Het wereldrecord vallende dominostenen is vrijdagavond in het WTC Expo in Leeuwarden verbroken. Tijdens de elfde editie van Domino Day, nota bene op vrijdag de dertiende, vielen 4.491.863 van de 4.8 miljoen opgestelde stenen om. Hiermee is het record van 2008 verbroken. Toen vielen er 4.345.027 van de 4,5 miljoen steentjes. In 2007 mislukte de recordpoging. Het thema van Domino Day 2009 was The World in Domino: The Show with The Flow. Robin Paul Weijers en zijn team hadden zeven velden ('flows') van 34 bij 17 meter gebouwd. Hiermee werden de verschillende continenten van de wereld in beeld gebracht, zodra de dominostenen in een vloeiende stroom omvielen. Builders challenges De zogeheten builders challenges zorgden voor extra spanning. In deze onderdelen van de show, met de thema's water lucht, aarde en vuur, plaatsten de bouwers in een race tegen de klok de laatste en belangrijkste dominosteentjes tussen de velden. Drie van deze opdrachten mislukten, alleen de vierde - met het thema vuur - slaagde. Hierbij werden steentjes tussen vlammen geplaatst. Als dit niet op tijd was gelukt, zou een veld van maar liefst een half miljoen steentjes overeind blijven staan en was de recordpoging mislukt. Het spektakel was live te bekijken op de zender SBS6 en (binnenkort) in tal van andere Europese landen.
