Un homme soupçonnné d'appartenir à un groupe extrémiste a allumé un petit explosif à bord d'un avion de ligne de la compagnie aérienne américaine Northwest Airlines à destination de Detroit, un incident qualifié par la Maison Blanche de "tentative d'acte de terrorisme", ont indiqué des responsables. Selon le député Peter King, un imporant membre de la Commission de la sécurité intérieure de la Chambre des représentants, le suspect est un Nigérian de 23 ans et a allumé l'explosif un peu avant l'atterrissage de l'avion à Detroit, dans le Michigan (centre des Etats-Unis). Selon un responsable de l'administration, interrogé par la chaîne de télévision CNN, la Maison Blanche considère cet incident comme "une tentative d'acte de terrorisme", alors que le gouvernement fédéral a affirmé dans un bulletin que le suspect appartiendrait à un groupe extrémiste. Le suspect, qui a été brûlé au second degré, a été immédiatement maîtrisé avant d'être transporté à un hôptial où il est placé en garde à vue.
