Inhofe: Let's look at the big picture. We have the Copenhagen meeting coming up in the middle of December. We now have learned the president has changed his mind again and President Obama will be attending around the 9th of December. It's my understanding that he will make the statement that he will commit ourselves to the emission standards that were in the Markey bill that passed the House of Representatives. I'm sure you've talked about that because that was several weeks ago. That's a 17% reduction in CO2 by the year 2020. Dobbs: From 2005 levels. Inhofe: Yes, that's correct. He can't do that. I just had an interview with a station in Copenhagen, in Denmark -- Dobbs: [laughter] Inhofe: -- that they were all under the assumption the president could unilaterally do that. No, that's not true. In fact, one of my good friends, a Democrat senator, Jim Webb from Virginia has sent a letter to the president and I'm quoting a sentence out of it now: "As you well know from your time in the Senate, only specific legislation agreed upon in the Congress, or a treaty ratified by the Senate, could actually create such a commitment on behalf of our country." So, we need to make sure -- and that's the main reason I was going to go to Copenhagen was to, if Barbara Boxer and John Kerry went there and made some kind of a commitment that we were going to do something, I wanted to make sure that countries were fully informed that we are not going to be passing legislation that will accomplish what President Obama I believe is going to tell on the 9th. Dobbs: Senator, this begs the question if I may put it forward right now: Who the hell does this president think he is? Inhofe: I dont know, because you can't do that. And I think it's certainly disingenuous to mislead countries into thinking that a president . . . You know, this is not a kingdom. He's not able to do that. Dobbs: Not yet! Inhofe: And we want to be sure that people realize that he cannot do that.

NOTE: A lot of complaints on two issues that I want to address: 1. Big Bang "The universe began with a giant explosion." First, this was not MY wording, it is from the NSF S&E survey of literacy, so there is nothing I can do to change it. "Explosion" was possibly used because "expansion" was tested to have a very low word recognition. "Explosion" can mean any sudden increase in volume or release of energy, or it can be narrowed to refer to only chemical reactions. The Big Bang can be called an explosion in the broad sense of a rapid expansion. 2. Witches. Again, not my wording. Wicca is a religion/cult belief/tradition. Witches are magical beings who have mystical powers. Perhaps some people got the two mixed up, but I think the results are still fairly in line with belief in magical powers. Muslim, and many Christian groups strongly advocate a belief in the active demonic agency of witches. Note that witches are at the bottom of a long list of paranormal beliefs. Despite great strides in our understanding, the average person still does not understand science in the facts or in the practice, and instead fills the void with pseudoscience. This reflects a worldview that values an emphasis on commonly accepted, traditional lore, and a general disinterest in the role of science and reason in our lives. Science is perceived by the media, government, and popular conciousness as something that happens to other people. This is unacceptable. We need to find a way to reach out with reason to the unreasonable, with knowledge to the ignorant, or else we will be unprepared when the moment of crisis finally arrives. There has never been a more important time to value and respect science, technology and reason. Those who value science can not retreat into their academic towers. We are dependent on popular, political support for this effort, and we will never advance to the next stage without overwhelming public momentum. Outreach is essential, and it can start anywhere, and at any level. I have a message and a challenge to all viewers. Do something to raise awareness of the role of science in our society, the importance of reason. Take it as a personal responsibility, or no-one will. This past week I met Gabe from Cobra Starship and he challenged me via twitter to a dance off at the jingle ball show in Sacramento with The End. Because of my broken foot i couldnt thrash him..haha..so i decided to just play the drums a little bit instead. Playing the drums and using a broken foot on the pedal isnt easy so i dont know how "epic" this solo was but it was worth it.
