On a chilly January morning 24 years ago, Corydon optometrist Jack Moss raised his new video camera to the sky over central Florida and captured one of the darkest moments in American space exploration the explosion of the shuttle Challenger. In the videotape, a stream of white smoke behind the climbing shuttle shoots into view but Moss, his wife and a neighbor noticed immediately that More..something was amiss when the channel separated into two streams. Thats trouble of some kind, Moss can be heard saying. That didnt look right. Moments later, someone is heard telling Moss that the Challenger had blown up. From Louisville Courier Journal More info: The Florida man who filmed it from his front yard on his new Betamax camcorder turned the tape over to an educational organization a week before he died this past December. The Space Exploration Archive has since published the video into the public domain in time for the 24th anniversary of the catastrophe. Despite being shot from about 70 miles from Cape Canaveral, the shuttle and the explosion can be seen quite clearly. It is unclear why he never shared the footage with NASA or the media. NASA officials say they were not aware of the video, but are interested in examining it now that it has been made available. "High Flight" Oh! http://www.bear.org Lily is a wild Black Bear who at 3 years old had her first cub on Friday, January 22, 2010. These are the highlights from the Den Cam from February 6th along with some fun sound clips at the end. A viewing from February 3rd http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwV1EbvL18o showed the cub rolling on her back. Researchers studied that clip and feel 90% sure that it is a girl...until the cub proves them wrong, they said. :) Fans are hoping it is in fact a girl, as female bears stay in the area for life, whereas males move away in 1 to 2 years. The researchers will be able to continue their studies on this little cub if their guess is a correct one. Cubs are born hairless and weigh only 1/2 to 1 lb at birth. This cub will stay with it's mother for about 17 months, hibernating with her next winter. A long-term study of black bear ecology and behavior is being conducted by the Wildlife Research Institute http://www.bearstudy.org near Ely, Minnesota, less than 30 miles from the Canadian border. On January 8th, a PixController video camera was installed in Lily's den by trusted researchers. The designs on the shirts are not photoshopped. They are real shirts for each frame of animation. The video was exported at 30fps, while the T-shirt animation moves at 6fps (with a few exceptions where it moves faster) So, for each shirt, we took 5 pictures, so the animation of us (Rhett&Link) moves at 30fps, but the T-shirt animations move a bit slower. There are a few places where the motion seems so smooth that it looks like video.
