Norwegian authorities are investigating strange lights seen in the arctic sky. The spiraling white light was seen for several minutes on Wednesday morning. Locals say the light appeared to be bigger than the moon. Thousands of Norwegians bombarded the Meteorological Institute to ask what the light could possibly be. Some feared it could have been a meteor, others a black hole and there were those who thought it could have been aliens. But defence experts in Olso suggest its more likely to have been a failed Russian missile launch from the area of the White Sea. They think a rocket probably got out of control and self destructed. There's been no official comment from the Russian Military . According to spaceweather.com (as well as several Norwegian-language news sources which do this author little good!) ,sky-watchers throughout northern Norway spotted this amazing phenomenon in the heavens on the night of Dec 8-9, 2009. No one knows for sure what it was, but here is the account from Nick Banbury, who witnessed the event from Harstad, Norway: It consisted initially of a green beam of light similar in color to the aurora with a mysterious rotating spiral at one end.this spiral then got bigger and bigger until it turned into a huge halo in the sky with the green beam extending down to the earth. According to the press, this could be seen all over northern Norway and must therefore have been very high up in the atmosphere to be seen hundreds of km apart Some say it my have been a Russian rocket careening out of control, but the tight-lipped Russians deny this at present. I'll be keeping an eye on this story for further developments. But it is still a mystery as to what created this fantastic sight. If you're a SETI kind of person, perhaps the aliens have at last arrived, but I don't recommend gambling on that in Vegas. -:)
