Madjid Bougherra Bio
The Algerian international joined Rangers in the summer of 2008, signing a four-year deal for £2.5m, and became a vital part of their defence.
Bougherra is very comfortable on the ball, a rare quality for a central defender. One of his trademarks is his ability to bring the ball out of defence and create space and opportunities due to the unpredictability of his actions.
He began his career at AS Quetigny in 1999, spending a season at the club before moving to AS Longvic, before making his name at French side FC Gueugnon in 2002.
He first arrived in the English game when Crewe Alexandra boss Dario Gradi signed him on loan and he impressed enough to draw the attention of Sheffield Wednesday boss Paul Sturrock, who soon agreed a fee of £250,000 to bring him in. Bougherra, or Magic as he is more fondly known, signed a three year deal at Hillsborough.
Staying for a season, Bougherra had made no secret of his desire to play in the Premier League - even posting a poll on his official website for people to vote on which club he would play there with - and Charlton won the race for his signature in January 2007, paying £2.5m to secure his services.
But he didn't stay long there either and lasted a season before heading north to Ibrox. After losing Carlos Cuellar to Aston Villa, Rangers found an adequate replacement and he helped them to a league and cup double in 2009.
