Since the comment is so old idk how to respond to it so I'll just do it here. Correct, it does not affect the storyline other than that scene. But to add on, it also decides who you will see at a certain point during the ending. And just so you know, in FFX-2 the younger of the two is the one who is alive, so if you want to go according to the technically correct storyline, he should survive.
