That is truly epic. What a way to debut at Carnegie Hall but with your father who led you through hell. Performing at Carnegie together... living both your dreams and playing there, as one, after going through so much... it's remarkable.
Thanks again for posting the video. I hope you enjoyed the excerpt. I recommend buying the book (underlined) Journey of a Thousand Miles. It's a good, quick, fun and exciting read and a great emotional ride, especially if you're a musician. God Bless! |

(continued) "To New York ears, the erhu is an exotic instrument, and Dad plays it brilliantly. We chose a Chinese composition called "Competing Horses" or "Horse Race," and for the program I changed the name to "Two Horses," because we'd arranged it for two instruments. The vibrant piece, in which the piano and the erhu create the sound of racing stallions, allowed my father to demonstrate his virtuosity, and he did so in grand style. Holding hands and bowing with him as we received a standing ovation, I couldn't help but think how far we had come together--it was a moment of great triumph and reconciliation."

(Read previous post) : (This excerpt is long but I feel it's necessary. I'm going to split up paragraphs in the posts):
(Lang Lang discussing his debut at Carnegie Hall) "... I wanted to do something special. I wanted to play a duet with my father. When he was young, my father's dream, like that of most musicians, had been to play at Carnegie Hall; yet his musical ambitions had been thwarted. For my entire life, my father had always been there, every step of the way, helping me to achieve my dream; despite the truly terrible times we had been through, the times I'd hated and resented him, I would not have had a career in music were it not for him--the career that became my own dream. By playing with him at Carnegie Hall, I could give him back something in gratitude. And besides, he is a fine musician, and I knew the audience would appreciate him; we would have fun together. Hello! Thank you for posting up Lang Lang's performance. I do not mean to correct you, it is only out of respect for the music, but the performance Lang Lang and his father played at Carnegie Hall was called "Two Horses" (that's what Lang Lang called it anyway) rather than "Horse." I did not know this until about 10 minutes ago when I finished Lang Lang's book "Journey of a Thousand Miles," in which he talks about the concert. Since you posted it, i'll type out an excerpt in my next post.
