Pt. 1 of Shanties from the 7 Seas
Pawn yer boots an' clothes and ship around the Horn. Along the way you'll meet the Creole gal know as "Sally Brown," "Shallow Brown," "Salambo," or "Shenandoah." You'll see places like Valaparaiso, Callao, several Rios, the Plains of Mexico, Mobile Bay (wuz yiz ever screwin' cotton there?), New Bedford, Boston, Newfoundland, Liverpool, London Town, Hong Kong, South Australia, Ilo, and Hilo. Everywhere, it seems, the judies got no combs, but haul away and make yer pay, and soon you'll be in Such-n-such Bay!
Details:
A quasi-systematic project of recording examples of ALL the sea chanteys (shanties) in Stan Hugill's book of the same title. The text compendium contains "over 400 shanties," and Hugill was one of the last living working chanteymen aboard merchant sailing vessels, who was responsible for keeping alive much know-how of chantey-singing after the days off sail had ended.
Page numbers in [brackets] correspond to the original edition of 1961, while numbers in (parentheses) refer to the abridged Mystic Seaport edition of 1994.

Reggay V-LOGS
Discussions on development of rhythmic grooves and instrumental styles in Jamaican popular music, along with putting knowledge into practice.
This is one component of the materials to support the "School of Reggay," a serious...yet casual...but defininately epic study of musical style in Jamaican recorded music. It seeks to credit the (usually taken for granted) instrumental musicians who shaped the course of the music through their individual contributions. There are mostly vlogs of me rambling about stuff that would be interesting only for Jamaican music geeks or people interested in understanding music on its own terms, using empirical observation to know Jamaican MUSIC and discarding pre-conceived notions about "Reggae"...yep, pretty dry.
I project made it through one "school year," spanning the 1950s up through 1971. However, another year of "classes" have been mapped out for a date "TBA," as they say.
